If you’re sitting on a plane right now and holding this magazine, it means that the missiles have ceased, and people are able to travel freely again. These times have been more than challenging and I by no means take for granted the fact that you are reading my words right now. Most of the work on this issue was carried out in times of great uncertainty, so it is truly a joy to get back to normal, and even more so to know that people can once again come and spend time in Israel. So, what better time than now to explore its less-traveled parts, such as the lovely city of Modi’in-Maccabim-Re’ut (Modi’in for short), which this year celebrates 30 years since its foundation. It has fascinating archaeological sites, charming little cafés and corners, a vibrant urban center with restaurants and shops, and a welcoming community eager to connect and share experiences. We spent a lovely day meeting fascinating people and making discoveries and returned with plenty of tips and recs for the perfect family day trip. For those looking to disconnect entirely and recharge their batteries, the desert is the ultimate destination. We gathered a ton of recommendations for you in this issue, with ideas for trips and attractions across the region, from Mitzpe Ramon,

to Sde Boker and the Arava, where we spent a magical weekend. Indeed, the Arava is home to the incredible Moa Living Resort, that offers an accommodation experience geared entirely towards physical and mental wellbeing. Built with an entirely ecological approach, and in complete harmony with the surrounding landscape, it is absolutely beautiful and we returned from it with all sorts of impressions and recommendations for you. Our magazine article this month is dedicated to a very special woman: Lt. Col. (res.) Irit Oren Gunders, founder of the “Or L’Mishpachot” organization that honors bereaved parents who lost their children serving in the IDF. In a special interview, Oren Gunders, recipient of the 2026 Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement, talks about her journey thus far, and her dreams for the future. And as always, you’ll find a whole host of other sections and articles in our magazine, that I hope will fill your flight time with pleasure and a sense of optimism. Wishing you a pleasant read and a peaceful flight, Nava Marton @nava.marton I nava@atmospheres.co.il

ETA becomes mandatory to enter the UK

EES: The European Union’s New Entry/Exit System The EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational last month on April 10th across the 29 countries of the Schengen area. The new automated system is designed to streamline management of the EU’s external borders and strengthen security. Airlines and travel experts are warning travelers about the eventuality of significant queues during the initial implementation phase. The EES represents the most significant change to European border management in decades. It effectively eliminates traditional ink and paper passport stamps for non-EU citizens, replacing them with a central digital register. The system applies to all “third country” travelers, including travelers from Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia visiting the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days.

6 Israeli hotels make it onto the prestigious Forbes list

Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETA) have become mandatory to travel to the United Kingdom. Without it you risk being denied boarding or entry into the country. British authorities have recently announced the full enforcement of the ETA mechanism, and citizens from the 85 countries that are exempt from the UK visa requirement, including Israeli citizens, can no longer enter the UK without said ETA. Airlines, ferry operators and train companies are required to refuse to board passengers who do not present the appropriate authorization. ETA requests cost €16 and can be made online via etaukcenter.com, with each ETA being valid for two years. A new hotel opens in Eilat The Herbert Samuel hotel chain which is part of the Jordache Group, continues to expand, launching its third location in Eilat, the Herbert Eilat. The new hotel offers 173 elegantly designed rooms, a spa, a gym, a central pool, a toddlers’ pool, a dining room and a poolside bar. The Herbert Samuel chain has stated that the hotel’s main emphasis is on comfort and accessibility to families with children, couples, and all vacationers in general. The hotel has undergone an extensive renovation process to bring it in line with the chain’s hospitality standards at an investment of millions of shekels, so as to offer the optimal luxury guest experience.

Following two years of absence on the Forbes Travel Guide hotel list due to the war, Israel has once again made it onto the prestigious luxury lifestyle magazine’s list of hotel favorites, placing Israel’s tourism industry back on the map. Indeed, six Israeli hotels have been added to the list, including the Ritz-Carlton in Herzliya, the Norman and Setai in Tel Aviv, the David Citadel Hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, and Mamilla in Jerusalem. The Forbes’ ranking is based on field tests that include more than 900 criteria of service, facilities and hospitality experience. After receiving the title of “Recommended Hotel”, the Ritz-Carlton Herzliya’s CEO Roy Avidor reacted by saying: “the overall experience we offer is one of a unique quality of service and guest experience, and we are committed to keep reaching new heights”.

Exhibition “Research Routine” | The Shenkar Design Research Center, Ramat Gan This exhibition delves into 70 years of Israeli design, presenting rare catalogs, photographs, texts and archive material from local craft and design exhibitions from the 1950s to the present day. “Exhibitions are one of the main tools for understanding local design”, explains Galit Gaon, director of the Shenkar Research Center. “They teach us about work processes, materials, and technology alongside the aspirations and imagination of local creators”. Visitors are invited not only to discover the artifacts on display, but to also take part in the exhibition’s construction by bringing in materials from their own private archives, have them scanned and processed in real time, and assimilated into the collection. This is a rare opportunity to see how cultural knowledge becomes an archival document and witness an exhibition take shape live in real time. Until August 2026, designarchive. shenkar.ac.il

The original Great Isaiah Scroll is currently on display in the Shrine of the Book in its entirety (717 cm). It is the oldest complete biblical manuscript to have been discovered to date. It was first displayed in 1965 when the Shrine of the Book space was inaugurated, before being replaced by a faithful copy three years later. The Isaiah Scroll is the most significant of the scrolls to have been discovered in the Judean Desert’s Qumran Caves. The exhibition examines it from up close, considering it as an archeological artifact, analyzing the materials and techniques used to make it, the evidence of its use before it was buried in the cave, and its exceptional cultural significance. The exhibition also shows visitors how the scrolls were found and how they eventually made their way to the Shrine the Book. Until July 2026, imj.org.il/en

Opera “Salome” | The Israeli Opera, Tel Aviv

Under the direction of Itay Tirna, the Israeli Opera is staging an impressive production of Richard Strauss’ opera based on the scandalous play by Oscar Wilde that tells the story of Princess Salome who’s famous “Dance of the Seven Veils” symbolizes the unbridled passion of a woman who refuses to give up her love. In an almost dystopian postmodern world, Strauss’ rich and complex music intensifies the drama in a work that is one of the most exciting and daring of the classical repertoire. Located uphill, it is immersed in the breathtaking landscape, and has a charming little secluded love bench on which hundreds of locks have been left here by guests who immortalized their love by throwing away the key to the lock into the nearby well. nofzuqim.co.il

A surprisingly fun day trip destination: Modi’in-Maccabim-Re’ut

Archaeological sites, innovative architecture, charming restaurants and cafés, shops and outdoor artworks - the city of Modi’in-Maccabim-Reut is a hidden gem in the heart of Israel and the ideal destination for an exciting family day trip / By Nava Marton

The city of Modi’in is celebrating 30 years since its first residents made it their home. In 2003, the cities of Maccabim and Reut were merged with it and the city officially became Modi’in-Maccabim-Reut, hereinafter referred to as Modi’in for short. Modi’in is located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and as the ancient capital of the Hasmoneans, it is filled with incredible archeological sites. It also displays a unique blend of architectural and technological innovation, with impressive boulevards, parks, and a city-center that has quickly become the region’s beating heart. We took a half-hour drive from Tel Aviv and headed over to discover its charms, (you can also take the train), and came back loaded with recommendations and ideas for what to see and do. Café Paris, Merkaz Renanim Parisian chic in the heart of Modi’in We started our day at Café Paris in Merkaz Renanim, in the center of Maccabim. It may look drab from the outside, but Merkaz Renanim is a charming little mall with boutiques, greenery, and lovely seating areas. Café Paris is also located here, offering quality coffee and a variety of (kosher) sandwiches, salads, and pastries in a Parisian atmosphere - with French chansons playing

in the background. Don’t miss the wonderful croissants and scones. The owners also head a vibrant new wine bar called Brasco, also in Merkaz Renanim, open in the evenings, from 7pm. Sun-Thu: 8am-7pm, Fri: 8am-3pm Givat HaBroshim Gorgeous views and artworks in the outdoors Located between Maccabim and Re’ut, the Givat HaBroshim hilltop rises to a height of 289 meters above sea level. In the spring, it is filled with blooming cyclamens and anemones. At the top of the hill, visitors can discover a series of artworks made by 50 artists from across Israel, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and more, displayed among the cypresses. It is also a charming lookout point where you can sit down and relax in front of the gorgeous views of the Ayalon Valley. The Amnon Lipkin-Shahak Birdwatching Deck, built in memory of Israel’s 15th Chief of Staff, is located right nearby and also offers lovely views and shaded seating. is located in the heart of Modi’in and is a kind of bridge connecting the modern and contemporary city with the ancient city that existed here thousands of years ago. A visit to the museum begins with a short experiential video recounting the history of the city from its ancient beginnings to its modern development today (suitable from age 4 and up). The museum is a veritable archeology treasure trove, with more than 150 artefacts on display, but it is also a platform for contemporary local art, regularly organizing temporary exhibitions

that create a dialogue between the art of today and the heritage of the past. Workshops and lectures are held here year-round, and guided tours of the city’s various heritage sites are also available. modiinmuseum.org.il The “Open House” initiative On cactuses and other stories Dov Goldberger, Professor of Education, Society and Community, invites visitors to discover his incredible cactus garden. Across 60sqm, cacti of every kind grow inside old pots and pans, lamps,

cheese graters, etc., as well as along the path that leads to his home and on the street outside. A tour of this unique cactus garden includes stories about the specificities of this special plant and its properties – just be careful not to get pricked. This type of garden isn’t common in Israel, and according to Goldberger, he is the only one in the country to have a certain variety that blooms from April to June with beautifully colorful flowers. Goldberger is a gracious host, and when you enter his home, you are no less surprised by his impressive collections of

Hamsa magnets, colorful gnomes, and many more objects and ornaments. The “Open House” initiative allows visitors to enter homes and private spaces - living rooms, kitchens, art studios, and gardens – so that they may get to know the city in a more authentic way. The hosts are all carefully selected, each offering a different aspect of the city’s social fabric. To book a visit, contact Adva: + 972-8-622-6768. Hurbat Ashun History and archeological findings Built next to an archaeological site, the Moreshet neighborhood is the city’s most recent one to have been built. Its construction uncovered many fascinating remains from the Hasmonean, Hellenistic, and Roman periods, including a farmhouse with an oil press, an industrial winepress, and more. These findings are now on display, with walking paths and shaded seating having been built all around, as well as a little playground and benches for the benefit of locals and visitors alike. A warm recommendation of ours is to come here at sunset, when the sky lights

up and the views are rendered even more spectacular. Where to eat Alaesh Located in the heart of the city’s industrial zone, this kosher steakhouse is surprisingly good, serving incredibly delicious, well crafted dishes in a warm and cozy atmosphere, including a rich variety of salads, dips, and appetizers, a selection of quality cuts of meat such as hanger steak skewers,

hamburgers with foie gras and onion jam, and beef fillet. You can order each dish separately, or share a meat platter with entrecote skewers, hanger steak, chicken skewers, souvlaki skewers, lamb kebab, and merguez sausages. The tabun-baked laffa flatbreads are unmissable, the drinks’ menu is rich and varied, and the kids’ menu includes chicken wing skewers, mini schnitzels, burgers and fries, and more. alaeshgrill.co.il, @alaesh.grill ˆ

A beacon of hope in a sea of grief The bereaved Fathers’ Journey to Vietnam

We sat down with retired IDF Lieutenant-Colonel Irit Oren Gundars, recipient of the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement this year, and the founder of Or L’Mishpachot, the bereaved IDF families organization, to talk about its journey thus far, and her dream of seeing the families’ choir perform at the White House one day / By Yoel Tzafrir

Choosing life Today, Or L’Mishpachot takes care of about 2,700 families. “Our goal is not to replace the many invaluable official institutions operating in Israel, but to add an extra layer,” explains Oren Gundars. The organization focuses on the present, on trying to see how bereavement can also be a moment in which new outlooks on life can occur. Or L’Mishpachot is all about sanctifying life itself, in parallel to honoring the heroism of the fallen. As part of its scope of activities, the

In 2004, retired IDF Lieutenant Colonel Irit Oren Gundars struck a relationship with three bereaved families whose sons had served in the IDF Combat Engineering Corps (where Oren Gundars served as Head of Human Resources) and were killed in combat in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Wishing to somehow ease their pain, she invited the three families into her home one night, thinking perhaps they would find it helpful to meet and talk about what they were going through. That evening, Oren Gundars

says she realized how powerful simply being together, spending time in each other’s company and sharing thoughts and feelings, can be. “We simply started to talk – first there were tears, and then, as the conversation developed, jokes and laughter arrived. I began to realize how healing talking, sharing thoughts and memories can be”, she recalls. Three years later, in 2007, Oren Gundars began laying the official foundations of what would later become the “Or L’Mishpachot” (Light for the Families) oraganization.

organization sends care packages to families, as well as provides financial support. Since the start of the Iron Swords War alone, 250 scholarships have been awarded to bereaved brothers and sisters, with each one amounting to NIS 7,200. Crossing borders Oren Gundars’ vision does not stop at the country’s borders. Or L’Mishpachot also organizes trips for delegations of bereaved parents to go and meet Jewish communities around the world. These events are also attended by Israeli ambassadors who come to show solidarity with local Jewish

communities, as well as with the bereaved parents. On these trips, forests are planted in memory of the fallen, new Torah scrolls are brought to synagogues, etc. Other types of trips are also organized, such as recreational, family-focused trips (including to Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Georgia), providing space and time for bereaved families to spend quality time together and try to feel the pulse of life again. One of the organization’s most exciting initiatives is the families’ choir. Singing is an incredible way of transforming pain into harmony and empowerment, as everyone works on getting ready to perform

on stage together. Oren Gundars is already eager to share her next big dream: “I’d love to see our choir perform at the White House - and I believe anything is possible”, she says. The living testimony of the positive impact Or L’Mishpachot has had over the years, is to be found in the feedback coming from the families themselves, with many parents writing to Oren Gundars to tell her how she helped them retrieve the will to go on living. For those who have experienced the most painful

of losses, that is no small feat. For donations and joining the association: or4family.org.il ˆ

Lifestyle I Resort Experience

Nestled in the heart of the Arava, Moa Living is an ecological retreat center that invites guests to engage in daily activities and experiences entirely focused on personal development and wellbeing. Late winter is the perfect time to head over, connect with the landscape, and experience true freedom / By Nava Marton Peace and quiet: a unique wellness experience in the heart of the desert

28 ATMOSPHERE MAY 2026 At a three-hour’s drive away from Tel Aviv, as the road begins to disappear behind you into an endless desert expanse, lies the path that leads to the Moa Living resort. It is located at about a kilometer and a half from the

settlement of Zofar, where the ancient Nabatean city of Moa once stood, some two thousand years ago. The first thing you notice as you set foot here is the utter silence that envelops you like a mantle of serenity.

Connecting with nature: Rooms made of stone and luxurious tents A veritable private sanctuary offering an escape from the bustle of everyday life, Moa Living covers 15 acres of land. It allows you to completely immerse yourself in the profound tranquility of the desert. Built with an ecological approach, using natural materials and in complete harmony with the landscape, the resort has 30 accommodation units, including double and family stone rooms, as well as luxury royal Rajasthani tents (all air-conditioned). Some rooms also have their own small, heated wading pools, and all the rooms are decorated in desert colors with beautiful Indonesian furniture. The tents are very spacious and similarly decorated, making for an ideal option for families. Daily wellness activities: An invitation to reconnect with yourself, body and soul Moa Living is entirely dedicated to physical and mental wellbeing. It offers a rich program of daily wellness activities open to everyone (at no additional charge). We started the morning with yoga and in the afternoon, we participated in an intuitive writing workshop. In the evening, we took part in a fire ritual of purification (which takes place every evening), where we took a handful of myrrh and frankincense, symbolizing feelings and thoughts we wanted to get rid of, and threw them into the fire to make room for better ones. At 10pm, we participated in a Sound Journey relaxation session, laying down with our eyes closed in a cozy yurt tent and relaxing to the sound of Tibetan and crystal bowls. The variety of wellness activities on offer is extremely broad, and includes rebirthing sessions, meditative walks,

Temazcal rituals, stargazing, massage therapy, and more. Desert excursions and soaking in hot tubs: The ultimate TLC With its beautiful orchard, ecological lake, palm trees and seating areas, Moa Living feels like a fairytale desert oasis. The ideal place to detoxify, body and soul. The sauna building offers Temazcal steam bath rituals, inviting you to soak in an outdoor 38°C hot tub (highly recommended in the evening and at night), or if you prefer, in an ice-cold (3°C) bath. Guests are also invited to enjoy the many desert hiking trails all around the resort, and have the option to visit the ancient ruins of the Moa settlement. A surf & turf experience: A rich plant-based and seafood buffet The large tent at the entrance to the Moa compound houses the resort restaurant and bar that’s open throughout the day, serving breakfast and dinner (if you book half board, you can enjoy the lunchtime menu at an additional fee). Meals are served in a rich buffet style on a beautiful antique wooden sideboard, while delicious breads, pizzas, and focaccias are baked in the adjacent brick taboon. The menu is plant-based, but includes fish and seafood dishes as well, with vegan, gluten-free and sugar-free options also available. The bar next to the restaurant offers a selection of cocktails based on herb extracts brewed onsite, as well as winter sangria, hot drinks, and healthy smoothies. Good to know: During the month of March, guests can enjoy up to 25% discount for midweek accommodation. Make sure to check the most updated prices via the resort’s website: moa-living.co.il ˆ
