Traveler’s Prayer May it be Thy will, Lord of Heaven and Earth, to lead us to peace and safety, to fly us in peace and safety to our desired destination, to find life, joy, and peace. Guard and watch us, we who fly the air pathways, cross the seas, and travel overland routes. Make firm the hands that guide the steering and sustain their spirit, so that they may lead us in peace and safety. For in You alone is our shelter from now unto eternity. The Lord bless thee, keep thee, the Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee, the Lord turns His face unto thee, and gives thee peace. Amen.

But what of female baroque musicians? The “Witches?” Festival, organized by the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, comes as an answer to that very question. Entirely dedicated to baroque female composers, it aims to introduce the audience to yet unknown pearls of the baroque repertoire. Directed by Ilan Ronen, the play conjures up a world where machines rule the land, babies are “upgraded” and “optimized”, and artificial intelligence has taken over our consciousness. Check-in I Travel Guide

You’re about to set off on the trip of your lifetime, you’ve made a million plans but you’re afraid some might fall through? Here are five tips on how to cope with your Fear of Missing out \ By Ariel Kars How to get over travel FOMO?

Accept FOMO as an inherent part of life 01 The sooner you realize that travel FOMO is inevitable, the sooner you’ll be able to relax. Accept that you’ll never be entirely rid of this so-called fear of missing out but stay focused on what you do manage to experience and enjoy it. If you allow your FOMO to get the better of you, your trip will be stressful and exhausting instead of fun and enriching. Focus on one region 02 In order to fully experience a foreign land, the secret is to concentrate on one region alone, and explore everything it has to offer. You’ll be surprised by how much you discover and the hidden beauty you can’t find in a travel guide but is just

around the corner if you take the time to uncover it. to enjoy yourself 03 A quick dip into travel psychology: holidays are an opportunity to take a break from our stressful routine of studying-working-taking -care-of-things. It therefore makes no sense to run around trying to tick absolutely each box on your holiday bucket list. Allow yourself to relax, in the full sense of the word. Sleep in, treat yourself to long multiple-course breakfasts, take long carefree walks. Don’t skimp on holiday fun 04 An odd piece of advice, say you? Sometimes what we most desire to experience when we’re on holiday, can be quite Don’t forget you’ve come

costly. Here’s an example: I was in England, visiting the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, and had the opportunity to take a half-hour flying lesson aboard a vintage airplane but I told myself it was too expensive. I ended up passing up what has been until now, the opportunity of a lifetime. Holidays are for having fun. If there’s something you really want to do, do it. You won’t regret it. It’s not a competition 05 We’re programmed to want to control situations, reach goals and accumulate achievements. We often tend to forget to enjoy the process along the way. Holidays abroad aren’t about winning points or proving something to someone. Aim to simply relax and enjoy the ride.

When’s the last time you were abroad? “My wife Naomi and I visited Venice and Milan last July to celebrate her 30 th birthday”. What’s your favorite kind of vacation? “It varies. I love beach vacations, visiting historical sites, organizing trips around sports events, like football matches and F1 races. We picked Venice because we wanted to go somewhere relaxing, and it was great. When it’s nights out I’m looking for, Ibiza is where I’ll head to”. What are your travel must-haves? “Perfume, deodorant, mouthwash and a good book - preferably one that is a light read, but inspiring, humorous and heartwarming”. What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at your hotel? “I put the suitcases down and head out. I like being spontaneous and just wandering around, taking in the surroundings”. What would you never do abroad? “I avoid cable cars - they scare me”. Do you have a particularly notable memory from a past holiday? “We were in LA once, and our flight got canceled when we’d already checked out of our hotel. Reluctantly, we spent the night in a motel, waiting for the next plane home. At 3 a.m., we heard gun shots. I woke up, looked at Naomi, and we decided it must have been fireworks. We went back to sleep and a minute later, there were police and ambulance sirens at full blast. We realized our motel was located in a rough neighborhood, but for us at least, it ended well”. Where do you dream of traveling to? “Space”. A personal recommendation to our readers? “Barcelona. I’ve already been three times and I love going back. I love the culture, the people, the sports scene, everything. I would also recommend visiting Universal Studios in LA, and SeaWorld in San Diego - both are amazing”.

Where to go and what to do Hukok Beach

Any trip to the Sea of Galilee, also called the Kinneret, begins with exploring its beaches. There are fifteen in total, and they are all family-friendly and freely accessible to pedestrians, though there are parking charges for those arriving by car. Many Kinneret beaches have camping sites, and numerous water sports activities can be practiced on the lake. Hukok beach is located in the northern part of the Sea of Galilee, and it offers shaded lawns to relax on as well as a camping site with showers (though without hot water), toilets, and a sink for washing plates. There are tents for rent, as well as mattresses and chairs and camping equipment can be purchased at the nearby convenience store. Hukok is labeled a “green beach”, i.e., neither barbecue lighting nor playing music are allowed. This shouldn’t hinder you from enjoying the many activities on offer, such as rafting, kayaking, SUP surfing, waterskiing (mostly in the summertime), though the absolute highlight has to be the family sailing trips available all year round, weather permitting. Groups of up to 11 people sail off to explore the Kinneret. Hukok is wheelchair accessible (toilets and parking lot included) through a pathway leading to the beach and picnic area, and water-resistant beach wheelchairs are at the disposal of those with restricted mobility. kineret.org.il Wakeboarding and wakesurfing In the port of Ein Gev, the “Wake Up!” school for water sports, led by Lior Eliyahu, former coach of the Israeli national waterski team and waterski champion himself, is the

18 ATMOSPHERE SEPTEMBER 2022

Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish New Year, and just as importantly, the beginning of the High Holidays - a time when many choose to visit synagogues across the country. The High Holidays are a great opportunity to visit some of Israel’s ancient synagogues, remnants of the thriving Jewish communities of Antiquity. Many historic synagogue artifacts dating back to the 3 rd century BC have been found in Egypt, and to the 1 st century AD, in Israel, and other countries. Synagogues were initially built to serve social purposes and were attributed a religious function only later. What better opportunity than Rosh Hashanah to set off on an exploration of some of the country’s most fascinating ancient synagogues. Baram National Park | Beautiful stone-carved doorways Baram National Park lies in the Upper Galilee. Its ancient synagogue is an impressive hewn stone structure that attests to the prosperity and vitality of early Jewish communities. The building’s façade, almost entirely intact to this day, is composed of three beautiful stone-carved arches that look towards Jerusalem. Beneath the central arch, there’s an inscription in Aramaic, probably the name of the man who funded the construction of the synagogue. There is a second synagogue in the village, smaller, and of which almost nothing remains, apart from the doorframe, today on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. parks.org.il

Dear passengers, In recent years, there’s been a lot of talk about preventative medicine. Experts across the world emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to insure a long and functional life. Though this may be true, something is missing: the fact that the most efficient preventative medicine of all involves taking our genes into account as well. If we all got genetically tested, we would know much more about the diseases we are most at risk of developing. In consequence, hereditary issues could be foreseen and delt with, and we’d hear much less horror stories of healthy, young people unexpectedly dying without warning. The good news: while genetic testing used to be complex and expensive, Covid-19 research has led to the revolutionary improvement of DNA sequencing technology. Costs have been reduced, and such tests are now accessible to all of us. At our own Genetics Institute here at Ichilov Hospital, DNA sequencing is available to all, be it before, during or after a pregnancy, and in cases of hereditary cardiological, neurological or geriatric issues. I feel like my work has contributed to bring Israel to the world and the world to Israel This month, Idan Raichel will be gracing the central stage of one of Israel’s most important music festivals, the Rishon Lezion “Live Festival”. As he gets ready for this celebration of art, music, and gastronomy, the Israeli musician, who this year will be marking 20 years of musical creation, tells us all about his connection with his fans, how music can bridge people together, and the challenges of being a father of four with a busy schedule \ By Maya Cohen

Idan Raichel will be helming a unique artistic experience this month at Rishon Lezion’s “Live Festival”. For four nights (September 5 th , 8 th , 9 th and 10 th ), the singer will be performing to crowds, while Chef Shaul Ben Aderet, one of Israel’s most lauded restaurateurs and owner of eateries “The Blue Rooster” and “Kimmel in the Gilboa”, cooks up delicious bites, and festivalgoers are invited to walk through art and photography exhibitions (notably performances are programmed to intertwine with Raichel’s show as well. “Nowadays, lots of music shows involve gimmicks and pyrotechnics, but in my new show, the focus is on the music and on the connection with the fans. The deep mutual understanding I have developed with my band makes it possible for us to create a musical experience that suffices to itself. Our goal is to create a show that is so powerful that if all the lights and screens were to go out, the audience would still connect with the songs and stories behind the lyrics”, explains Raichel. A new way of making music Over the course of his 20-year career, Idan Raichel (45), has become one of Israel’s most significant musicians, both at home and around the world. His 2002 album, “The Idan Raichel Project”, achieved quadruple-platinum status, the first of many successes to unfold over the years. Raichel of artists Bartzi Goldblatt and Nevo Afek). creates music that meshes lyrics written in many different languages – Arabic, German, Spanish, Amharic, Hebrew, French – and by doing so, has gained legions of fans in all four corners of the world. Raichel is also the recipient of some of Israel’s highest cultural and musical honors, as well as of international awards obtained for his social activism, notably the “Unsung Hero Award” in memory of Martin Luther King, from the hands of MLK’s son himself, received for his support of the Israeli Ethiopian community. You’ve received many prizes and awards over the years. Which one do you consider to be the most significant? “Every award is an opportunity to thank the incredible people I work with, and most importantly, the fans without whom nothing of what we do would be possible. Performing in front of former US President Barack Obama and lighting one of the torches at Israel’s Torch-Lighting Ceremony on Independence Day are two deeply significant moments for me, as was performing in front of wounded Israeli soldiers, or at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony”, says Raichel.

Our quick questionnaire What’s your daily routine? “I only began having a daily routine once my kids were born. Like any regular family, our days are punctuated by

school runs, after-school activities, mealtimes, etc.”.

What do you do in your spare time? “I swim every day. It’s important for me to stay fit so that I can keep giving my all on stage. Anything I do is ultimately connected to music. If I read a book, I always look for how it can inspire me in my work”. What’s your favorite family activity? “What I enjoy most is having conversations with my kids. I find their fresh and innocent outlook on life inspiring and full of insight”. What might people not know about you? “I have a paralyzing fear of cockroaches. If I see a cockroach on stage, I won’t go up until he’s been removed. And if one appears at home, my wife or daughter take care of getting rid of it”. What would you be doing had you not become a musician? “I would have liked to learn how to cook and work in an itinerant restaurant, one that stays open in one country for a certain time period, before moving on to the next”.

The passion for musical creation

Raichel is not one to rest on his laurels. Alongside his work with his band, he has several ongoing solo and collaborative projects and has no intention of slowing down. “Though it may seem difficult to

manage several projects at a time, it’s actually what makes it easier for me to create”, he says with a smile. “Without it I feel trapped. It’s essential to create out of a sense of passion. Collaborating with other artists, such as India.Arie in the US or Vieux Farka Touré in Mali, with whom I produced two albums under the name “The Touré-Raichel Collective”, is precisely what allows me to feel inspired to continue working with my band. To me, being a husband and a father - (Raichel has four children with his wife Damaris: Philippa Helena (8), Salomé (6), and twins Camillo and Emilio (1,5), M.C.) - is the biggest challenge of them all ”, Raichel adds. Obama and shared the stage with Alicia Keys. Is there another major artist or personality you dream of performing with or for? “It’s true. I have performed in front of some of the world’s highest-ranking individuals. But the highlight of those experiences was getting to see the behind the scenes - seeing Barack Obama take a selfie for his daughter, witnessing Alicia Keys’ humility, treating me like her musical equal despite her megastar status, was special. Raichel is considered a world music pioneer in Israel, and his artistic

involvement with the Israeli Ethiopian community has built bridges between cultures and communities. In response to my question about whether he feels it’s his mission to do so, he says: “I love seeing artists from diverse backgrounds express who they are through music. 20 years ago, Israeli pop and rock music was mostly influenced by American pop, and songs in Amharic weren’t played on the radio. That has all changed, and I feel like my work has contributed to bring Israel to the world and the world to Israel”.

“Though my work with the band is often described as world music, to my mind, our music is Israeli in its essence. What is the definition of world music? To me, it’s music that is connected to the artist’s place of birth or upbringing. One of the biggest compliments anyone can pay me is to describe my music as world music from Israel. Nowadays, world music is much more widespread than it used to be, all thanks to the fans and radio djs who pushed us forward and understood the need to broaden the horizons of our musical landscape”, he says. What’s your next big challenge? “My next big challenge has been underway for a few years now – being the best dad I can be to my kids. Building a home and doing so while embarking upon musical

projects can be stressful. The challenge never ceases and is the work of a lifetime”, he explains. We are currently living through turbulent times and Israeli society is divided. Do you believe music can play a role in reversing the situation? “These are definitely unnerving times. I think that this very interview, in a magazine that is read by Israelis and tourists alike, can serve as a bridge between Israel and the world. It’s important to remember that in the past, standing united is what allowed us to overcome adversity. This land is our home, and we are all brothers and sisters, members of the same tribe. Music festivals are wonderful opportunities to get together and spend time singing, dreaming, and coexisting”, he concludes. ■

gemstones are the driving force behind every piece of jewelry she creates – sometimes it’s one particular stone that inspires a new design. Inner wealth, creativity and a craftsmanship honed over the course of many years, are Oved’s “working tools”. “I have an instinctive feeling for what type of jewel will suit each individual woman. A customer can come in with a fixed idea of what she wants but if I realize that what would work best for her is a different color or size of stone, we’ll discuss it and work on the design together so that the end jewel will be the most suited to that particular customer”, she explains. The brand’s flagship store in Kikar HaMedina attracts a clientele of all ages and standing, and Oved makes a point of designing jewelry for all women and not just for the top percentile. “My own path as a woman has been long and arduous, and I haven’t forgotten where I came from. When I see sparkles in a customer’s eyes as they put on my jewelry, I can’t help but feel just as emotional. Creating beautiful things for women is my calling, and I’m so glad the family-business and new brand allow me to do just that”, she says with a smile. 70 th H. Bayer st.
