The Sea of Galilee, crowded in the summertime, becomes a haven of gorgeous views and family experiences. Read all about it, in the insider’s guide we’ve prepared for you this month. A trip to the Sea of Galilee holds within it the promise of beautiful beaches, hiking trails, historical sites, and of course, exquisite food. The advent of Rosh Hashanah at the end of the month is also the perfect occasion to visit some of Israel’s ancient synagogues. The archeological wonders they encase are simply breathtaking, and you will instantly be transported into High-Holiday mode. We’ve also fixed you up with a guide to some of Israel’s best rooftop restaurants: cooler temperatures

are even cooler from up above, and even more enjoyable when accompanied with a plate of top-notch food. This month, EL AL is partnering with the Idan Raichel Project to celebrate its 20 th anniversary. As one of the nation’s most successful artists, Raichel has become one of its most beloved cultural ambassadors. Culture | The Israel Festival Jerusalem The 61 st edition of the Israel Festival will be held this month in Jerusalem just before the start of the High Holidays. Contemporary dance performances, live music, a historical satire on climate change, and many more events will be staged in the Jerusalem Theatre and locations nearby. The festival’s main attraction this year is its opening show, “Sun & Sea”. This international operatic production about climate change, Golden Lion winner at the 2019 Venice Biennale, opens with a scene of swimsuited carefree holidaymakers by the sea, that break into song to warn of coming ecological disasters. The audience beholds the scene from balconies suspended 4m above the stage, which adds to the uniqueness of this opera experience. Performances are free of charge and open to all. Art | The Manofim Contemporary Arts Festival Jerusalem

This year, the Manofim Festival will be held over five days and nights, during which festivalgoers will be able to delight in original artworks exhibited in numerous venues across Jerusalem. Rooftops and intimate artists’ studios, garrets and art galleries, will welcome visitors into the small hours of the night. Live music, art installations, the Jerusalem Art Conference, a bilingual art club, and dozens of exhibition openings await art lovers of all ages, in a celebration of contemporary art and the 10-year-anniversary of Harama Magazine. Music | The “Witches?” Festival Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Most will be familiar with the names Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, or Georg F. Händel, three famous baroque composers. But what of female baroque musicians? The “Witches?” Festival, organized by the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, comes as an answer to that very question. Entirely dedicated to baroque female composers, it aims to introduce the audience to yet unknown pearls of the baroque repertoire. Six concerts of both orchestral and chamber music pieces, all written by women, will be held in several locations across Exhibition | Alber Elbaz-The Dream Factory The Design Museum of Holon Haute-couture designer Alber Elbaz grew up in Holon, before later emigrating to New York, conquering Paris and leaving his unique mark on the fashion world. A year after his untimely death due to Covid-19, the Design Museum of Holon is celebrating his life and work in a major multimedia retrospective. Curated by fashion historian Yaara Keydar, the exhibition presents rare archival materials as well as tribute pieces designed by such iconic fashion houses as Dior, Gucci and Balenciaga. The play’s dark humor, served by a brilliant cast, offers a chilling glimpse into what a digital dictatorship could look like in the not-too-distant future. When’s the last time you were abroad? “My wife Naomi and I visited Venice and Milan last July to celebrate her 30 th birthday”. What’s your favorite kind of vacation? “It varies. I love beach vacations, visiting historical sites, organizing trips around sports events, like football matches and F1 races. We picked Venice because we wanted to go somewhere relaxing, and it was great. When it’s nights out I’m looking for, Ibiza is where I’ll head to”. What are your travel must-haves? “Perfume, deodorant, mouthwash and a good book - preferably one that is a light read, but inspiring, humorous and heartwarming”. What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at your hotel? “I put the suitcases down and head out. I like being spontaneous and just wandering around, taking in the surroundings”. What would you never do abroad? “I avoid cable cars - they scare me”. Do you have a particularly notable memory from a past holiday? “We were in LA once, and our flight got canceled when we’d already checked out of our hotel. Reluctantly, we spent the night in a motel, waiting for the next plane home. At 3 a.m., we heard gun shots. I woke up, looked at Naomi, and we decided it must have been fireworks. We went back to sleep and a minute later, there were police and ambulance sirens at full blast. We realized our motel was located in a rough neighborhood, but for us at least, it ended well”. Where do you dream of traveling to? “Space”. A personal recommendation to our readers? “Barcelona. I’ve already been three times and I love going back. Where to go and what to do Hukok Beach

Any trip to the Sea of Galilee, also called the Kinneret, begins with exploring its beaches. There are fifteen in total, and they are all family-friendly and freely accessible to pedestrians, though there are parking charges for those arriving by car. Many Kinneret beaches have camping sites, and numerous water sports activities can be practiced on the lake. Hukok beach is located in the northern part of the Sea of Galilee, and it offers shaded lawns to relax on as well as a camping site with showers (though without hot water), toilets, and a sink for washing plates. There are tents for rent, as well as mattresses and chairs and camping equipment can be purchased at the nearby convenience store. Hukok is labeled a “green beach”, i.e., neither barbecue lighting nor playing music are allowed. This shouldn’t hinder you from enjoying the many activities on offer, such as rafting, kayaking, SUP surfing, waterskiing (mostly in the summertime), though the absolute highlight has to be the family sailing trips available all year round, weather permitting. Groups of up to 11 people sail off to explore the Kinneret. Hukok is wheelchair accessible (toilets and parking lot included) through a pathway leading to the beach and picnic area, and water-resistant beach wheelchairs are at the disposal of those with restricted mobility. kineret.org.il Wakeboarding and wakesurfing In the port of Ein Gev, the “Wake Up!” school for water sports, led by Lior Eliyahu, former coach of the Israeli national waterski team and waterski champion himself, is the

There are trails to Mount Susita that overlooks the Sea of Galilee and the gorgeous Golan pastures where cattle herds graze, and the region’s impressive banana plantations. Other trails involving stopping for a swim or cooking an outdoor lunch are also available. The port is accessible via the kibbutz and has a delightful boardwalk promenade with fishing boats and restaurants dotted along the way, including a falafel eatery and a fish burger joint. A kids’ play center, with two stories of games, slides and climbing walls, offers oceans of fun to children of all ages. There are sea-themed creative activities, painting stations, and a cafeteria overlooking the Kinneret. Make sure to check opening hours before arriving at the play center. baitbanamal.co.il Historical sites and spectacular landscapes Families who enjoy nature walks will delight in the many hiking trails that surround the Kinneret, particularly the one encircling 85% of the Sea of Galilee (known as the “Shvil Sovev Kinneret”), from which all the beaches are easily accessible. Fruit plantations (no picking allowed!), historical sites, including churches and an ancient synagogue, are all

dotted across the hiking trail and fascinating to explore. The trail is divided into difficulty levels so that families may adapt and choose the one best suited to them. kineret.org.il Where to eat Fresh fish served in an enchanting atmosphere There are two fantastic fish and seafood restaurants in Ein Gev port, each open on different days of the week. Both are helmed by Chef Manor Zeituni Amon. During the week, Mifgash Ha’dayagim (in English: The Fishermen’s Corner), a kosher

fish and seafood restaurant, serves wonderful fish dishes with fries and ice-cold beer in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. The décor is sea-themed, and the outdoor seating area looks out onto the beautiful Kinneret. The menu includes kids’ meals with fish fingers, a slew of first courses to choose from (fish cigars, focaccias, eggplant carpaccio, etc.), and delicious desserts (coconut sushi, nougat cremino, crème brûlée, and more). Open Sunday to Wednesday from 12 pm. Misedet Ha’dayagim (in English: The Fishermen’s Restaurant), opens its doors on the weekend and operates Thursdays to Saturdays. Situated

Where to stay The Ein Gev Holiday Resort Situated on the Kinneret shore itself, the Ein Gev Holiday Resort has recently been refurbished. 59 new family bungalows have been erected, each with its own balcony and access to the beach, as well as a master bedroom and kids’ bedroom (sleeping up to three children), a smart TV and fully equipped bathroom and kitchen. The resort offers many kids’ activities (a weekly timetable is available at reception upon request). Breakfast is served every morning in a communal dining area and billiard and ping pong tables are available for use by all guests. In 2003, two local cattle farmers, Roi Tavor and Itamar Kendlik, decided to open a butcher’s shop, Marinado, to sell the quality

beef they produce. They went on to open a restaurant as well, Marinado Restaurant, which serves choice cuts of lamb, veal, prime rib, lamb T-bone steak, lamb kebab and the list goes on. The menu also includes chicken dishes and salads as well as vegan options and dishes for kids. The restaurant is situated at the entrance of Ein Gev Kibbutz, as well as the adjacent Marinado delicatessen, where visitors can purchase wine, olive oil, condiments, sauces, olives, kitchen utensils and picnic accessories. Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish New Year, and just as importantly, the beginning of the High Holidays - a time when many choose to visit synagogues across the country. The High Holidays are a great opportunity to visit some of Israel’s ancient synagogues, remnants of the thriving Jewish communities of Antiquity. Many historic synagogue artifacts dating back to the 3 rd century BC have been found in Egypt, and to the 1 st century AD, in Israel, and other countries. Synagogues were initially built to serve social purposes and were attributed a religious function only later. What better opportunity than Rosh Hashanah to set off on an exploration of some of the country’s most fascinating ancient synagogues. Baram National Park | Beautiful stone-carved doorways Baram National Park lies in the Upper Galilee. Its ancient synagogue is an impressive hewn stone structure that attests to the prosperity and vitality of early Jewish communities. The building’s façade, almost entirely intact to this day, is composed of three beautiful stone-carved arches that look towards Jerusalem. Beneath the central arch, there’s an inscription in Aramaic, probably the name of the man who funded the construction of the synagogue. There is a second synagogue in the village, smaller, and of which almost nothing remains, apart from the doorframe, today on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. parks.org.il

Masada National Park | Palaces and a bath house Herod the Great built a large fortress with two palaces on top of an isolated rock plateau as a refuge for himself in the event of a revolt. When the Great Revolt did come (66-73 AD), Jewish rebels took over the fortress, and a brutal 3-month- long Roman siege began. The Jews turned a stable into a synagogue and built statues out of construction waste. The Israel Antiquities Authority undertook the restoration of the mosaic and in 2009, it was placed back in its original spot. It includes 55 vignettes, each depicting a different scene: vine workers, animals, wine amphoras, and Jewish motifs such as menorahs as well.

Idan Raichel will be helming a unique artistic experience this month at Rishon Lezion’s “Live Festival”. For four nights (September 5 th , 8 th , 9 th and 10 th ), the singer will be performing to crowds, while Chef Shaul Ben Aderet, one of Israel’s most lauded restaurateurs and owner of eateries “The Blue Rooster” and “Kimmel in the Gilboa”, cooks up delicious bites, and festivalgoers are invited to walk through art and photography exhibitions (notably performances are programmed to intertwine with Raichel’s show as well. “Nowadays, lots of music shows involve gimmicks and pyrotechnics, but in my new show, the focus is on the music and on the connection with the fans. The deep mutual understanding I have developed with my band makes it possible for us to create a musical experience that suffices to itself. Our goal is to create a show that is so powerful that if all the lights and screens were to go out, the audience would still connect with the songs and stories behind the lyrics”, explains Raichel. A new way of making music Over the course of his 20-year career, Idan Raichel (45), has become one of Israel’s most significant musicians, both at home and around the world. Which one do you consider to be the most significant? “Every award is an opportunity to thank the incredible people I work with, and most importantly, the fans without whom nothing of what we do would be possible. Performing in front of former US President Barack Obama and lighting one of the torches at Israel’s Torch-Lighting Ceremony on Independence Day are two deeply significant moments for me, as was performing in front of wounded Israeli soldiers, or at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony”, says Raichel.

Our quick questionnaire What’s your daily routine? “I only began having a daily routine once my kids were born. Like any regular family, our days are punctuated by

school runs, after-school activities, mealtimes, etc.”.

What do you do in your spare time? “I swim every day. It’s important for me to stay fit so that I can keep giving my all on stage. Anything I do is ultimately connected to music. If I read a book, I always look for how it can inspire me in my work”. What’s your favorite family activity? “What I enjoy most is having conversations with my kids. I find their fresh and innocent outlook on life inspiring and full of insight”. What might people not know about you? “I have a paralyzing fear of cockroaches. If I see a cockroach on stage, I won’t go up until he’s been removed. And if one appears at home, my wife or daughter take care of getting rid of it”. What would you be doing had you not become a musician? “I would have liked to learn how to cook and work in an itinerant restaurant, one that stays open in one country for a certain time period, before moving on to the next”.

manage several projects at a time, it’s actually what makes it easier for me to create”, he says with a smile. “Without it I feel trapped. It’s essential to create out of a sense of passion. Collaborating with other artists, such as India.Arie in the US or Vieux Farka Touré in Mali, with whom I produced two albums under the name “The Touré-Raichel Collective”, is precisely what allows me to feel inspired to continue working with my band. To me, being a husband and a father - (Raichel has four children with his wife Damaris: Philippa Helena (8), Salomé (6), and twins Camillo and Emilio (1,5), M.C.) - is the biggest challenge of them all ”, Raichel adds. I have performed in front of some of the world’s highest-ranking individuals. But the highlight of those experiences was getting to see the behind the scenes - seeing Barack Obama take a selfie for his daughter, witnessing Alicia Keys’ humility, treating me like her musical equal despite her megastar status, was special. Raichel is considered a world music pioneer in Israel, and his artistic

involvement with the Israeli Ethiopian community has built bridges between cultures and communities. In response to my question about whether he feels it’s his mission to do so, he says: “I love seeing artists from diverse backgrounds express who they are through music. 20 years ago, Israeli pop and rock music was mostly influenced by American pop, and songs in Amharic weren’t played on the radio. That has all changed, and I feel like my work has contributed to bring Israel to the world and the world to Israel”.

“Though my work with the band is often described as world music, to my mind, our music is Israeli in its essence. What is the definition of world music? To me, it’s music that is connected to the artist’s place of birth or upbringing. One of the biggest compliments anyone can pay me is to describe my music as world music from Israel. Nowadays, world music is much more widespread than it used to be, all thanks to the fans and radio djs who pushed us forward and understood the need to broaden the horizons of our musical landscape”, he says. What’s your next big challenge? “My next big challenge has been underway for a few years now – being the best dad I can be to my kids. Building a home and doing so while embarking upon musical

projects can be stressful. The challenge never ceases and is the work of a lifetime”, he explains. We are currently living through turbulent times and Israeli society is divided. Do you believe music can play a role in reversing the situation? “These are definitely unnerving times. I think that this very interview, in a magazine that is read by Israelis and tourists alike, can serve as a bridge between Israel and the world. It’s important to remember that in the past, standing united is what allowed us to overcome adversity. This land is our home, and we are all brothers and sisters, members of the same tribe. Music festivals are wonderful opportunities to get together and spend time singing, dreaming, and coexisting”, he concludes. ■
