Try S.M.AR.T. goals The start of a new year is also a great time to look at ways to optimize your goal-setting strategy. S.M.A.R.T. goals are a great tool for this. The acronym stands for: Specific – define your specific goal, for instance, instead of writing “invest in my health”, define a specific goal such as “go for a walk three times a week”. Measurable – set measurable goals. For instance: “lose 5kg until the wedding in December”. Relevant – keep track of goal relevance, i.e., make sure the goals you set are in keeping with your priorities, values, and aspirations. Time-sensitive – stay attentive to the issue of time, i.e., set a reasonable timeframe in which to achieve your goal. Attainable – choose an attainable goal. For instance: “go abroad twice a year”, instead of “travel the world”.

2 Set an inspiring goal for yourself The secret here is to choose something you truly want for yourself (as opposed to something your parents or partner may want for you). Think of something you care deeply about. Ask yourself: does this match my priorities, Write a checklist Just as companies take inventory at the end of each year, so should we use this special time to do a little stocktaking of our own. Why not list all the past year’s goals and achievements? Evaluating which objectives were met and which were not can be a powerful tool for self-improvement, but make sure you don’t forget to acknowledge your successes and accomplishments, as this will motivate you to keep going.

3 4 Divide your goal into several smaller steps We tend to let enthusiasm get the better of us

Goal tracking apps

If you haven’t yet begun using goal tracking apps, now could be a great time to give them a go. These free digital goal tracking tools (e.g., Google Keep, Apple Notes, Todoist) remind you of the goals you have set, as well as help you manage the timeframe you allotted to achieve them in and follow the progress of each one of your tasks and goals.

and can sometimes set unreasonable goals for ourselves. Ironically, this is what ends up getting in the way of real progress. Instead of deciding that you will “change the way you organize your finances”, divide your goal into more doable steps. For instance, decide you will “check your bank account every morning”, or “go over your credit card statement every month”, etc. And most importantly: keep it up long-term.

dreams, and aspirations? If the answer is yes – go for it!
