(4) The only way to solve the city of Houston's worsening problem of groundwater shortages is to increase the water supply by putting in more and deeper wells. 12. While the currently available data shows only moderate increases in global average temperature, experts fear that data due to be released in the near future will show much greater increases. (1) While the current belief is that only moderate increases in global average temperature have occurred, some experts disagree, claiming that larger increases have actually occurred. (2) Experts fear that there will soon be evidence that large increases in global average temperature have occurred, even though the current data indicates that only modest increases have taken place. (3) Experts disagree over whether the data shows that large increases in global average temperature have occurred, or only moderate increases. (4) According to experts the global average temperature has increased moderately, despite new data which indicates that the increases are much greater than believed.

Reading Comprehension This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text .

Text I (Questions 13-17)

Greek mythology expresses neither unity nor consistency. The lack of coherence is due to the several factors that went into the formation of Greek myths and mythological personages. First, the existing fragments of Greek myths cover a period from the 2nd millennium BC to the beginnings of the Christian era. These myths and fragments of myths are in many cases parts of total mythological cycles in local communities, but in 5 many cases the entire cycle is not known today. Second, the corpus of Greek mythology contains mythological elements from different cultures and histories. For example, the Indo-European cultural element is represented in deities such as Zeus, whereas Mediterranean Minoan-Mycenaean structures are symbolized by figures such as Demeter, Aphrodite, Rhea, and others. 10 Complicating the problem even more is the fact that Greek poets, tragedians, and philosophers present their own literary and philosophical interpretations and dramas of the deities, making use of the many strands and varied traditions of the mythological cycles. The gods are portrayed in Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, then again in Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days. Each of the great Greek tragedians, Sophocles, 15 Aeschylus, and Euripides, gives expression to the myths in his dramas. Philosophical interpretations in the pre-Socratics and in Plato and Aristotle continue this tradition of interpretation and reinterpretation. According to Herodotus, Homer and Hesiod defined the gods. They drew from a rich and complex historical and mythological past, indicating themes and trends that 20 have become decisive for the understanding of Greek mythology. Hesiod presupposes the reality of the gods, whereas Homer's characterization of them is symbolic. In neither case, however, do the gods possess a universal meaning; in making use of the mythological historical tradition both poets tend to constantly merge various traditions into the unity of their forms of narration. 25

Text II (Questions 18-22)

Before World War II, semiconductors were no more than a laboratory curiosity - a class of crystalline solid that, as the name semiconductor implies, conduct electricity neither very well nor very poorly. In 1948, however, with the invention of the transistor, the extraordinary usefulness of semiconductors was recognized. What makes them so valuable is their capacity to be altered to form various electronic devices - including 5 diodes, transistors, and microprocessors - that are the basis for the ongoing revolution in the electronics industry. Semiconductor materials may be divided into two general groups: intrinsic and extrinsic. An intrinsic semiconductor is chemically very pure, and its conductivity is poor. Some common intrinsic semiconductors are single crystals of silicon, germanium, 10 and gallium arsenide. These may be converted into the more useful extrinsic semiconductors by the addition of small amounts of impurities. This process, known as doping, alters the electrical properties of the semiconductor and improves its conductivity. four electrons in its outermost shell. These electrons attach the silicon atom to its neighboring atoms and so are not free to move through the solid. Accordingly, since electric current relies on the motion of electric charge, pure silicon is a poor conductor of electricity. If phosphorus atoms, with five outer electrons, are substituted for some of the silicon atoms, the fifth electron is not needed for binding to adjacent atoms and is 20 free to move through the solid. Thus, doping silicon with phosphorus improves the silicon's conductivity. Other atoms used for doping, such as boron, have one less outer electron than does silicon. When they are substituted for some of the silicon atoms, each captures one electron from a neighboring silicon atom, leaving an empty space, or hole. Such holes behave as though they were freely moving particles with a positive charge, 25 and thus they also serve to increase the silicon's conductivity. An extrinsic semiconductor is commonly classified as n- or p-type, depending on whether the impurity added has an excess of negative charge (n-type) or a deficiency of negative charge (p-type). For example, the atom of an intrinsic semiconductor such as elemental silicon has 15

Reading Comprehension This part consists of two passages, each followed by several related questions. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text .

Text I (Questions 13-17)

Radio, envisioned by its inventor as a great humanitarian contribution, was seized upon by the generals soon after its birth in 1895 and impressed as an instrument of war. For it immeasurably magnified the chief military advantage of telegraphy: instantaneous control of an entire army by a single commander. By eliminating the need for physical linkage by wire, radio speeded communication between headquarters, joined through the 5 other units that could not connect by wire because of distance, terrain, hostile forces, or rapid movement, opened communications with naval and air forces, and eased the economic burden of producing immense quantities of wire. But few blessings are unmixed. Just as the telegraph had made military communications much more effective but had also increased the possibility of 10 interception over that of hand-carried dispatches, so radio's vast amplification of military communications was accompanied by an enormously greater probability of interception. The public, omnidirectional nature of radio transmissions, which makes wireless communication so easy to establish, makes it equally easy to intercept. It was no longer necessary to gain physical access to a telegraph line behind the enemy's front to 15 eavesdrop upon his communications. A commander had only to sit in his headquarters and tune his radio to the enemy's wavelength. Radio thereupon introduced two revolutionary factors in the interception of communications: volume and continuity.

Text II (Questions 18-22)

Japan has been called the world's most rapidly changing society. At the same time, Japan rests upon traditions reaching back into the mists of time. History and tradition, far from imposing barriers to change, have actually stimulated change in Japan in a manner perhaps unknown in other nations of the world. Throughout their long history, the Japanese people have shown a unique aptitude 5 for assimilating and adapting new ideas to their particular cultural milieu. This aptitude stems from the history and geography of Japan, which have created an unusually homogeneous people. Over the centuries, they developed institutions, customs, and characteristics that have given them a strong sense of national identity and common purpose. 10 The strength and stability derived from these features of the national life helped Japan undergo two major transformations in the last one hundred years, first in the late 19th century when it threw off a stagnant feudal system to embark upon the road to modernization and again in the mid-20th century when it turned away from the tragic experience of World War II to create a new society dedicated to peaceful cooperation 15 and the democratic way of life. While these two periods brought almost revolutionary change in both the political and social structure, this was accomplished without discarding traditional roots or impairing social continuity.

Questions

18. The best title for this text is -

(1) Japan - Adopting New Ideas While Conserving the Old Ones (2) Japan - A Land Torn between Tradition and Innovation (3) Japan - Facing the Trauma of the 20th Century (4) Japan - Facing the Future Shock

19. According to the second paragraph, the Japanese people -

(1) have always been reluctant to adopt new ideas (2) have always had the ability to absorb new ideas (3) have lately become open to new ideas (4) have a unique attitude toward their long history

20. “This aptitude” in line 6 refers to -

(1) bringing revolutionary change (2) creating a new society (3) turning away from tragic experiences (4) adapting new ideas
