Text II (Questions 18-22)

Japan has been called the world's most rapidly changing society. At the same time, Japan rests upon traditions reaching back into the mists of time. History and tradition, far from imposing barriers to change, have actually stimulated change in Japan in a manner perhaps unknown in other nations of the world. Throughout their long history, the Japanese people have shown a unique aptitude 5 for assimilating and adapting new ideas to their particular cultural milieu. This aptitude stems from the history and geography of Japan, which have created an unusually homogeneous people. Over the centuries, they developed institutions, customs, and characteristics that have given them a strong sense of national identity and common purpose. 10 The strength and stability derived from these features of the national life helped Japan undergo two major transformations in the last one hundred years, first in the late 19th century when it threw off a stagnant feudal system to embark upon the road to modernization and again in the mid-20th century when it turned away from the tragic experience of World War II to create a new society dedicated to peaceful cooperation 15 and the democratic way of life. While these two periods brought almost revolutionary change in both the political and social structure, this was accomplished without discarding traditional roots or impairing social continuity.
