The art of embroidery is one of the oldest crafts in the world. Today, it is both used as a vehicle for self-expression and a soothing occupational therapy activity. This month, we bring to you five Israeli designers working in diverse fields of creation, from fashion to ceramics and photography, who all incorporate embroidery into their art / By Adi Fogel Hollander Beautiful threads
Ayala Tzur A graduate of the Tel Hai Academy’s ceramics department, Ayala Tzur’s poetic and fragile works combine the main medium she works with, ceramics, with embroidery – an art form which has been part of her life since childhood. Tzur explains that she alternates between striving for precision and searching for imprecision, and the possibility of effectual unraveling and disintegration. Her recent works feature embroidery not as a direct material with thread and needle, but as an image that takes on new life through ceramic techniques like engraving, embossing, and sprinkling. Tzur lives and works in Kibbutz

Aviv Keller Bezalel and Hatachana School graduate Aviv Keller creates multilayered embroidery works that dialogue between the art of painting and that of embroidery. Keller’s embroidery creates dense weaves which up close appear as colorful, wild surfaces of lines, while from a distance the details coalesce into a realistic whole. With embroidery requiring slow, meticulous work, miles away from the fast pace of modern life, Keller’s works appear as reflective mirrors of the present and its hectic realities. avivkeller.com, avivkeller
