A Jewish Journey of Identity and Courage

“Wow,” Mom exclaimed. “That’s amazing! This is even more important than a suspension.” “I agree,” Mr. Miller said, then turned to me. “David, I’m sorry you had to face this attitude from your friends and teammates. It’s good that you came to us; it helps prevent other children from experiencing what you did. You should feel free to come to me or Mrs. Walker if anything like this happens again.” I nodded, still too shocked to speak. My biggest concern was that Marcus, and his friends would seek revenge for the punishment. Fortunately, Mom knew exactly what to ask. “Thank you both,” she said. “I’m a bit worried about how the boys will react to David. They’re all on the same team, and there’s a lot of interaction between them.” Dad nodded in agreement, and everyone, including Mr. Miller, turned their attention to Mrs. Walker. “The matter is being handled, Mrs. Levitt. I’ve spoken to Coach Joey, and I’ll be talking to the boy’s parents today. He’ll be suspended from basketball practice for a week. If this happens again or if David faces any further issues, he won’t be allowed to return to the team.” Wow, that’s a serious punishment for Marcus. This might actually make a difference. I looked at Mom and nodded, seeking her approval. The meeting wrapped up with more handshakes and expressions of gratitude. I said goodbye to my parents and hurried to my next class. Just as I settled into my seat, it hit me: the most important game of the season is in two days, and Marcus won’t be able to play! What are your thoughts on the punishment Marcus received? Do you think it will lead to a change in his behavior?
