The actual experience of retirement is for most people a loss; a massive change in a person's life. Like any other loss it must be made sense of before a person can move forward. It seems likely that people who prepare for retirement cope better with it. But 15 just as important as preparation is the extent of the loss. For some people their job is the center of their world, whereas for others it is simply one of many activities they enjoy. In socio-economic terms retirement is a curious phenomenon. Why have we not established a reasonable income system for retirement? Some argue that retirement policies are deliberately flexible and retirement itself is kept financially unattractive in 20 order to sustain a pool of reserve labor that can easily be made available if the need arises.
