Unit 6

The word “Fauves” had particular reference to the brilliant, arbitrary color, more 10 intense than the scientific color of the neo-impressionists and the non-descriptive color of Gauguin and Van-Gogh, and to the direct, violent brushwork with which Matisse and his friends had been experimenting with for the previous years. The Fauves wished to use violent color squeezed directly from the tube, not to describe objects in nature, not simply to set up retinal vibrations, not to accentuate a romantic or mystical subject, but to build 15 new pictorial values apart from all these. They were not actually introducing a new concept into twentieth-century painting. Rather, they were carrying to their logical conclusions - and in the process, destroying the concept of great innovators of the previous generation - Gauguin, Van-Gogh, and Seurat.
