Text I (Questions 13-17)

Although Columbus “discovered” the Americas in the Eurocentric view , these lands had already been discovered and occupied many thousands of years earlier by nomadic hunters crossing over from Siberia during past Ice Ages. Archaeological evidence shows that the descendants of these prehistoric nomads had spread across the two joined continents from tip to tip in a remarkably short period . Columbus believed that he had 5 discovered the fringe of Asia and the Indies and thus he mistakenly named the natives that he encountered “Indians” . In 1492, the year of Columbus’s arrival, the Americas were abundantly populated. Some sources estimate the population on both continents to have been 100 million people. Agriculture was developed and practiced in most areas, with the principle crops being corn, 10 beans and squash. People also relied on hunting for food. Hunting was the main source of protein because the only domesticated animals were the dog, llama and alpaca, all of which were raised for purposes other than food. Stone tools predominated, although some gold and silver work existed . The most advanced native civilizations were near the equator. The warm climate 15 supported sophisticated agricultural techniques, allowing large population concentrations. Moving away from the equator toward the poles, the natives were generally more primitive , having smaller populations .
