Regardless of the difference in sophistication and culture, the varied native groups suffered devastation following the arrival of the Europeans. The primary causes of death 20 were European diseases for which the natives had no immunity and little tolerance. Experts estimate that by 1600, approximately one-hundred years after Columbus arrived, the native population in the Americas dropped to only 20 million. The psychological and cultural shock of this tragedy was devastating, and made possible the European conquest and settlement of the New World . Death , dispossession and conquest were the common fates of 25 all native American civilizations. 13.
