Text II (Questions 18-22) The issues that concerned Thomas Aquinas in his political philosophy - the nature of political order, the force of reason, the function of the law, the meaning of justice and the relationship between everyday life and divine order - all of these reflect the concerns of a society and a theology in transition. After their introduction to Aristotle’s work in the late 12 th and early 13 th centuries, Western European philosophers were forced to rethink the 5 foundations of their beliefs. Studying Aquinas in the context of the political and philosophical movements of his own time is essential to understanding the motivation for his teachings, but confining him to that era fails to recognize the lasting impact of his work. Questions on how to interpret law, on what constitutes human justice, and on whether or not our actions reflect divine guidance, are posed almost daily today in world politics. In 10 the United States of recent years, both liberation theologians on the left and fundamentalist preachers on the right have aroused interest in political and moral issues. Both groups argue political questions on religious grounds, though, like their Aristotelian and Neo-Platonic counterparts of the 13 th century, they interpret these religious grounds in dramatically different ways. Thus, the problem of working out the relationship between reason and 15 religious revelation in morals and politics continues to trouble modern thinkers. For today’s student of moral and political theory, the study of Aquinas’s philosophy can provide reasoned insight into central problems of current political life.
