5 . There is considerable disagreement over how this year’s budget surplus is to be disposed of.

(1) How the extra money in the budget this year will be spent is the subject of significant dispute. (2) There is quite an argument over whether or not this year’s budget actually contains any extra funds or not. (3) The amount of waste in this year’s budget has caused some severe disagreements. (4) The budget contains extra funds this year, but not everyone wants to spend them. 6. Thanks to the leadership of the new chief executive officer, our company has experienced rising profits in each of the last three years. (1) After three years of leadership, the new chief executive officer has finally been able to make the company increase its profits. (2) For each of the last three years, the new chief executive officer has succeeded in increasing the amount of money made by the company. (3) The company did not make a profit until three years ago, when the new executive officer came and provided better leadership. (4) The company has made profits in one of the last three years, thanks to the new chief executive officer who leads the company.

7. The mission’s primary goal is to retrieve a satellite, while a secondary goal is to test a new propulsion system.

(1) During the first part of the mission, a satellite will be retrieved; during the second part, a new propulsion system will be tested. (2) The easy part of this mission will be the testing of a new propulsion system; the difficult part will be the recovery of a satellite. (3) One possible goal for this mission is the retrieval of a satellite; another would be the testing of a new propulsion system. (4) The main objective of the mission is the recovery of a satellite; an additional objective is the test of a propulsion system.

8. A remark which is entirely innocuous in one context, might be considered quite offensive in another.

(1) The context in which a remark is made is the most important factor, which determines how it is received, for good or bad. (2) In a given context, one remark might be quite innocent, while another could be very insulting. (3) Depending on the situation, the same remark might be either harmless, or very insulting. (4) Some remarks don’t provoke any anger, while others make people very angry.
