Puccini’s Chinese princess Turandot fears marriage so much that she poses riddles to her suitors—those who fail to solve them pay with their lives. But when Prince Calaf solves her riddles, Turandot discovers the secrets of love and, more importantly, her humanity. In the Duchy of Mantua, Italy, we encounter Rigoletto , Verdi’s tragic court jester, who tries desperately to protect his beloved daughter Gilda from the men around her, only to unwittingly finance her demise, carrying her lifeless body at the opera’s conclusion.
