Editor’s Letter

In Israel, February is the month where everything is in full bloom - fields of red anemones, white and pink almond blossoms, irises and cyclamen, exploding with color across the country. And during these tough times, they’re a glorious symbol of hope and renewal. Almost four months have passed since the attacks of October 7 th, and the country is doing its best to get back to normal, welcoming with open arms those coming to volunteer, explore the country, or visit friends and family. This is one of the most delightful times of the year in Israel, with everything in bloom and the weather neither too hot nor too cold. It’s such a great time for daytrips in the country, to take in the winter sun, catch some peace and quiet, or discover a new museum or trek trail. In this issue you’ll find 14 ideas for relaxing winter activities, both indoors and outdoors – including the Darom Adom festival in the Negev, that will be taking place this year despite the situation. (Do note, that event

times and specifications may potentially be modified in accordance with security instructions, so make sure to consult event schedules online from time to time). These troubled times have prompted many heartwarming initiatives. We’ve chosen to showcase initiatives from the world of Israeli design, that are all about solidarity, human connection, and hope. We also sat down for a chat with the president of the Negev region’s Sapir Academic College, with thirty of its members having been murdered and killed since October 7 th . Though the academic year started late and is taking place remotely, it is clear to everyone - faculty members, staff, and students alike, that it’s just a matter of time before they return to their beautiful campus, to live, study, volunteer, and work, in their beloved northwestern Negev. EL AL Keeps Israel Connected to the World

EL AL and Delta Air Lines sign a codeshare agreement that includes advantages for frequent flyers

Last month, EL AL and Delta Air Lines launched a long-term codeshare agreement that allows passengers flying between Israel and the Americas to benefit from connecting flights. The agreement includes mutual advantages for both companies’ respective frequent flyers club members, such as accumulating and using up Delta Skymiles or EL AL frequent flyer club points. Delta passengers will be able to fly from North America to Tel Aviv on direct EL AL flights from JFK New York, Newark, Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. The EL AL code (LY) will be added to Delta flights from Tel Aviv to the US, as well as to about 280 connecting flights via Delta’s main US airports. These include JFK New York, Atlanta, Boston, and Los

Angeles and cover a wide range of destinations such as Washington, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle, Dallas, and Toronto.

This codeshare agreement will enhance the value proposition for EL AL customers flying from Israel to various destinations across the Americas. The partnership with Delta Air Lines, coupled with the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, gives way to many diverse and convenient options for Israeli passengers. This codeshare agreement will also enable Delta Air Lines to offer passengers even more flight options between Israel and North America. Since January 15 th , the two companies have begun offering their respective frequent flyers club members mutual benefits such as preferred seating, priority check-in, extra checked baggage, and access to the airport lounge when available.

I wanted to connect with you because there are some exciting updates I’m eager to share. If you recall, last September we introduced a new menu that I crafted exclusively for you. This menu was an opportunity for me to share my personal story, my roots, and the profound connection to the Land of Israel, which influences the flavors that define us. As we strive to keep things interesting and diverse for you, I’m thrilled to announce that we will be updating the entire menu on flights departing from Tel Aviv this month. You can look forward to savoring new dishes that tell new stories. Moreover, I’m delighted to share that we will gradually introduce the new menu to incoming flights bound for Israel. The first kitchen where I worked was in New York, where our new menu will now be served on all incoming flights. The fresh menu will narrate our Israeli story - where home-cooked food holds immense significance, acting as a unifying force that brings everyone and their homes together simultaneously. This menu bridges Israel and the world, fusing local ingredients with that distinct Israeli twist that makes us unique. Excitingly, we are embarking on crafting menus from kitchens around the world, and, just between us, our next destination is... Miami! I sincerely hope you relish the flavors of our new dishes, and I wish you a delightful - and delicious - flight.

We’ve recently noticed that more and more Israelis are going on short visits abroad to recuperate from the stress brought on by the war. In order to allow customers to purchase tickets ahead of time while still taking into account the uncertainty in people’s lives right now, the tickets can be canceled free of charge and substituted with future-use vouchers of the same value of the canceled ticket. Tickets can be canceled up to 24 hours prior to boarding. Canceled tickets for flights scheduled in February and until April 30 th 2024 (all ticket types included, except for LITE tickets, bonus tickets and group tickets), are replaced with vouchers of an equivalent value to the ticket that was canceled without any

cancelation fee required. The voucher also covers ancillary services such as extra checked baggage and preferred seating. What’s more, EL AL and Sun d’Or vouchers are not personalized and can be passed onto someone else. This offer gives passengers the option to be covered by “EL AL Protect” which gives EL AL and Sun d’Or customers the possibility to cancel flights and receive future use vouchers of the same value as the canceled flight. “EL AL Protect” will be available for purchase as of May 1 st. In light of the current climate and the reality of uncertainty, this service offers the option to buy tickets ahead of time with the possibility of canceling them free of charge at the last minute if need be.

EL AL is renewing its Phuket line, as well as seat supply to Bangkok

EL AL affiliate Sun d’Or has increased its flights to Warsaw with a total of 5 weekly flights and added 2 weekly flights to Tbilisi for the winter season

This winter, Israelis have been eager for a break from the stressful climate back home. EL AL affiliate Sun d’Or has thus increased its weekly flights to certain seasonal favorites such as Warsaw, adding an extra flight to the Polish capital each Wednesday until the end of winter, reaching a total of five weekly flights to Warsaw, as well as two weekly flights to Krakow. EL AL is expanding its Tokyo route in order to respond to Israeli demand for more flights to Japan both for tourism and business purposes. The route’s flight schedule until December 2024 is available for purchase, with the first flight scheduled for March 6 th . The new year-round format will include four more flights a week from Tel Aviv to Tokyo. Furthermore, connecting flights to a variety of destinations will also be available as part of EL AL’s codeshare agreement with Japanese airline company ANA.

This month, Sun d’Or is adding two weekly flights to Tbilisi, reaching nine weekly flights to the Georgian capital in total. All in all, Sun d’Or operates flights to five European destinations, including Larnaca, Cyprus with nine weekly flights, and Kishinev, Moldova with three weekly flights. Tickets are purchasable via the EL AL website and at travel agencies.

With more and more Israelis taking holiday breaks, demand for flights to Thailand has increased accordingly. In light of this, EL AL has reopened its line of direct flights to Phuket and increased seat supply to Bangkok. As of this month, EL AL will operate three weekly flights to Phuket on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and return flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturday evenings. EL AL is currently operating flights to 35 destinations around the world, steadfast in its commitment to remain a bridge between Israel and the world.

EL AL remains committed to the release of the hostages

Since October 7 th , EL AL has been actively participating in the war effort, particularly in advocating for the release of hostages still held in Gaza. To date, EL AL has flown hundreds of family members of hostages to various diplomatic missions worldwide, fully funding these flights. On January 14 th , which marked 100 days since the hostages’ captivity, EL AL demonstrated solidarity through various tributes. An hourglass exhibit symbolizing the diminishing time for the hostages was flown to the UN headquarters in New York. This exhibit, created by the “Ramat Hashna’im” association, originally showcased in Tel Aviv’s HaBima square, weighed over 300kg and stood at 3.5 meters high, making its transportation to New York through JFK airport a significant logistical challenge. Additionally, on January 14 th , the flagship EL AL flight “LY001,” departing from Tel Aviv at 01:00 Hersh Goldberg-Polin was supposed to board an EL AL flight to India on December 27 th and start his big trip around the world. But on October 7 th , Hersh was captured by Hamas and taken hostage to Gaza, as he was partying at the Nova festival. As a tribute to Hersh, and with the hope to raise awareness about the plight of the hostages, EL AL flight captains Gil Shimoni and Erez Dor spoke to Hersh’s parents John and Rachel through the EL AL control system as they were flying above India on their way to Bangkok. “Hersh was supposed to be flying to India with EL AL today, and together with To Hersh, with love

for JFK airport, was renamed flight LY100 in honor of the hostages’ 100 days in captivity. This flight was operated aboard the “Jerusalem of Gold” aircraft, carrying the message “Stand with Israel” since the onset of the war. The EL AL website background has been modified to commemorate the hostages’ 100 days in captivity, and each flight features a special address narrating

the story of the 136 hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza. EL AL expresses unwavering support for the hostages’ families and remains dedicated to raising awareness in Israel and internationally. The airline is committed to doing everything possible to bring each and every hostage back home to their families.

The initiative activities have been modified this year to suit the current climate, so as to offer maximum relaxation. Among the activities, there are yoga classes by the beach, sundown Pilates, guided tours in the desert, workshops with local artists and creators, glass bottomed-boat rides in the Red Sea, guided e-bike rides across the Eilat mountains, SUP sessions, city food tours, and more – and all entirely for free. Now! Light Boxes Gallery, Jaffa

This exhibition showcases a series of works made by a variety of artists using numerous mediums and techniques, all created in the wake of the October 7 attacks. The works on show were made out of the need to bear witness and document the horrors that took place, the terror and pain caused to families and communities, and the wave of support and affection that Israelis showed their wounded and bereaved compatriots in these darkest of times.

Some of the works include the “Guernica” referencing

painting by Zoya Cherkassky, the “daily postcard” series by Zeev Engelmeyer with its faux-naïve colorful illustrations, (curators: Portfolio magazine editors Hagit Peleg Rotem, Limor Margolyes, Yuval Saar). Nature | To blossom again - Darom Adom

Before the attacks of October 7 th , the Darom Adom Festival, was a joyful February celebration of nature as the red anemones of the Negev were in bloom. But this year, though the anemones may be blooming anew, the word “festival” has been set aside, and the event logo includes the invocation: “to blossom again”. Indeed, this year’s Darom Adom events all celebrate the notion of hope and rebirth, notably the KKL JNF march in honor of Ofir Libstein z”l, the head of the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council who was killed on October 7 th as he was defending his home in kibbutz Kfar Aza. Invitees only will be taking part in the march, but Israelis and communities around the world are warmly invited to wear red shirts and organize their own march of solidarity, via the dedicated app. The yearly Darom Adom anemones race will take place in the Nahal Grar-Sharsheret Park in collaboration with the Hostages and Missing Families Forum as a mark of solidarity with those still held captive by Hamas. There shall also be KKL JNF guided tours of the surrounding forests and sites. Important note: “Darom Adom” will take place in accordance with security guidelines. 03 Outdoor fun | HaNadiv Park

Ramat HaNadiv lies between Zikhron Ya’akov and Binyamina and spreads across over a thousand acres of land. An oasis of green expanses and wild nature, it was first established in honor of Baron Edmond de Rothschild. HaNadiv Park, nicknamed “the Versailles gardens of the Carmel region”, possesses a multitude of paths and trails across five different sections including a rose garden, a

waterfall garden, a palm tree garden, a herb garden, and an rare iris garden that is awe-strikingly beautiful in February and March when the flowers are in bloom. The park is also home to the mausoleum erected in memory of the Baron de Rothschild and his wife. There’s also a games’ park, a wishing well, and the remains

Music | The Red Sea Jazz Festival The winter version of the Red Sea Jazz Festival offers a dazzling selection of shows and performances including interesting pairings of well-known artists and unmissable concerts with some of the most exciting international musicians. The Red Sea Jazz Festival’s winter version was originally created by the late Dubi Lenz z”l who was the festival’s artistic director from 2011 to June 2023 when he passed away. The festival’s opening show, “Boundless love”, pays tribute to Lenz’s passion for music and will comprise performances by Eli Dejibri, Joca Perpignan, Marcelo Nami, Yasmin Levi, Rona Kenan, and more. Other shows include: David Broza, Rami Kleinstein hosting Jane Bordeaux, Brazilian harmonica player Gabriel Grossi and his trio, and more. This year marks the 23 rd edition of the Bank Hapoalim-backed Israeli art exhibition. The exhibition showcases young Israeli artists and creators, and this year, its focus is on the subject of mental health, trauma and mental disabilities brought on by the experience of war. All proceeds will go to the

Amutat Enosh association, an Israeli mental health association. More than 600 art works are presented this year, by artists from across Israel, including artists from the western Negev region who have had to leave their homes in the wake of the October 7 attacks. Visitors will also be able to enjoy

the museum shop and purchase items such as those made by Amutat Enosh’s very own brand “R U OK?” (t-shirts, hats, keyholders, bracelets, etc.), as well as posters made by Studio Knafaim. Nature | The Vickar birdwatching observation deck

This observation deck at the Mishmar HaSharon reservoir is one of the best places in Israel to watch the multitude of birds flying through the skies. Pelicans are particularly easy to spot here, some merely stopping on their way south, while others remain for the whole winter season, knowing fish is abundant here. The ANU Museum of the Jewish People is dedicated to Jewish history, heritage, and culture across the ages and the world. Its exhibitions are always fascinatingly multilayered, and presented in such a way that visitors of all ages are drawn into the exhibits and

The Spirit film festival, Tel Aviv Cinematheque

The Tel Aviv Cinematheque’s 17 th Spirit film festival will take place over four days with dozens of film projections, lectures, talks, and debates on spirituality and mind-expanding themes. The Spirit festival is regarded as one of the most important international cinema events in the world of self-enlightenment and spirituality. Among the fascinating subjects discussed at the festival this year: the story of a Chilean journalist who fought to bring the crimes of Pinochet to light and suffered from Alzheimer’s in later life, the journey of 20 thousand nuns across the Tibetan mountains, a documentary exploring the most recent discoveries in human consciousness, etc. This year, the festival will also, for the first time, hold its own Israeli short film competition (up to 30 minutes). The festival’s opening movie is “The Monk and the Gun” by Pawo Choyning Dorji, (“Lunana: a yak in the classroom”), a beautiful and deeply moving film shot in Bhutan and the Himalayan mountains. Urban day trip | A day of fun at Tel Aviv’s Park HaMesila

Now the greenest spot in the south of Tel Aviv, this used to be where the old Ottoman train passed through on its way from Jaffa to Jerusalem and back. The new park is situated between the Neve Tzedek and Florentin neighborhoods, and is a great spot to enjoy a picnic, let the kids play, ride a bike and have a coffee. This is also where the new Elifelet tram station is located, which makes it an accessible gem in the heart of the city. Hanoch Daum’s “Hug a reservist” initiative - supporting the businesses of Israeli reservists 14

Asif is an experiential and cultural hub centered around the research, documentation, and celebration of Israeli cuisine – located in Tel Aviv. Established by the Jewish Food Society and Israeli tech company Start-Up Nation Central, the center operates a first-rate restaurant and café that places great emphasis on local produce and offers a menu composed of typically Israeli dishes. There’s also a deli, a gallery, and a unique collection of cookery books. The institute also boasts a wonderful rooftop garden filled with plants and herbs, some cultivated using innovative AgriTech technologies. The garden is a cornucopia of heirloom plants and new varieties of fruit, vegetables, and fresh herbs. On Fridays, between 10:00 and 12:00, there are guided tours of the gallery, library, garden, and kitchen, where participants are invited to taste some of the delicious dishes served here. Israeli writer, comedian, and journalist Hanoch Daum has launched his “Hug a reservist” initiative to support

the businesses of Israeli army reservists. According to Daum, he began receiving messages from reservists two weeks after the start of the war telling him of the financial strife their businesses were in since they’d been called to the frontlines. Daum immediately raised the issue on social media, pushing people to support the businesses and establishments of reservists. The response from the public was incredible and the “Hug a reservist” initiative was officially born, with Daum’s wife Efrat managing it all. The yellow ribbon You’ve probably seen this yellow ribbon attached to the lapels of TV presenters, politicians, social activists, demonstrators, and people around the world. It was created by Israeli designer Shaul Cohen who printed it in his studio in Tel Aviv on his 3D printer. Cohen initially printed out 300 ribbons and distributed them to his Instagram followers who he invited to come to his studio and get them for free. The materials of love Tel Aviv ceramicists Adi Tal and Shay Gerassy create objects inspired by the history and use of earthenware in Israel across the ages. After the tragedy of October 7 th , they launched a special project, asking friends, army reservists, farmers, and regular citizens, to send them earth from the kibbutzim and towns hit by the attacks. With it, they created 239 mugs to represent the 239 hostages captured and taken to Gaza on October 7 th . Each mug is unique and encapsulates within it the earth and soil of the kibbutzim of the Gaza Envelope. The project lasted eight weeks, during which only part of the hostages were released. Wrapping memory The unbearable images that flooded news channels and social media after the attacks of October 7 th led Amit Trainin, head of illustration at the Bezalel Academy of Arts’ department of visual communication, to launch an initiative that would bring respite to the eye and celebrate the beauty of Israel’s southwestern Gaza Envelope region, before it was hit by tragedy, with the hope to raise money for families that have been displaced and bereaved. Together with fellow Bezalel teachers, Bezalel students, and former students, and in collaboration with the Keren Shoresh association, Be’eri printing house, and Israeli company Wix, a website was launched with more than 60 illustrations to raise money for the displaced. Posters of hope Israeli design store Asufa has launched a poster project born out of the deep desire for hope, optimism, and unity, after the tragedy of October 7 th . Dozens of Israeli designers were invited to take part in creating a poster inspired by an Israeli song they love. The posters are all 70cmx50cm and printed in the Be’eri printing house. The project has been widely hailed as a success, with many of its posters enthusiastically plastered across Tel Aviv. The freedom bird In order to express his deep solidarity with the families of the hostages, Israeli designer Shalom Blechman of design company PITARO Furniture, designed the “freedom bird”. The bird symbolizes freedom and the cry for the release of the men, women, and children still held in captivity in Gaza. The birds are all handmade at the PITARO workshop, each one entirely unique and different from the other, just as each hostage is a unique and entire universe unto him/herself. On October 7 th , Hamas terrorists arrived at the gates of Sapir College in the Western Negev. Thankfully they were locked, and the college remained intact, but the Sapir community was deeply shaken. The academic year at Sapir started late, with remote classes held via Zoom and in various locations across the country. Sapir College is situated near the city of Sderot, about three and a half kilometers from the Gaza border. It is Israel’s biggest public college and a major driver of growth in the Negev region. Almost 7,000 students attend Sapir College and its adjacent Sapir Technological College of Practical Engineering, and it is the

region’s biggest employer, with 1,300 employees on its payroll. On October 7 th and to date Sapir has lost 30 members of its community and the partner of one of the college’s employees was kidnapped and taken to Gaza. Since the terror attacks, Professor Nir Kedar, president of Sapir College,

has been working relentlessly, together with the college faculty and staff, to make sure their community gets through these dark times so that Sapir College continues to be a major regional growth engine. What challenges have you been dealing with? “After the attack, our first challenge

was to make sure all the members of our community were ok. We contacted all the students, all the members of faculty, all the employees, to find out who was hurt, who needed help finding somewhere safe to stay, who needed psychological support, financial help, etc. We opened a support group that has helped hundreds of people, and an emergency fund for basic needs and mental health support was created to help students and faculty members. Our community is very strong, but its members are scattered across the country, staying in hotels or temporary housing, dealing with extreme uncertainty and trauma. The next challenge was making sure the college continued to operate and that employees were still getting paid, even though most of the staff had been displaced, including our salary calculator who is living in a hotel room with her entire family – a human and logistics challenge of truly immense proportions. The third challenge we had was to encourage our students to get back to their studies. We demanded and obtained full tuition scholarships from the state, for each Sapir student, and I thank my fellow members of the Council for Higher Education who made that possible. I’m proud to say that despite the war,

the number of students at Sapir has even increased”. What does the current academic year look like? “We came back with a lot of desire to teach and meet the students. Classes are remote – either taking place via Zoom or in various locations across the country. Our film school for instance is holding classes in Ashdod, in four different locations in Tel Aviv, and in Bar Ilan. The challenge here is two-fold: we both need to take into account the needs

of our displaced students and faculty members, still living in hotel rooms or staying with family, and still need to maintain standards of academic excellence. We hope to be back on our beloved campus by the start of the second semester”. What kind of support does the college need right now? “Our current focus is getting our students back to living, studying, working, and volunteering here in the Western Negev. Before the war, our students were active local residents, part of the growing population here, contributing the region’s success and economy. We’ve launched a fundraising campaign for living stipends and rent support for those coming back to live here. Being the powerful social and educational hub that we are, it’s our job to attract young people to come here to study, and live and revive the region. Sapir will be a game changer in the recovery of the area. We have no right not to maintain classes at Sapir College”, concludes Professor Kedar, “our college isn’t merely a center of higher education.
