See the Light Israeli design stores are brimming with designer Hanukkah menorahs that blend the traditional with the contemporary. Modern hanukkiahs integrate a diversity of materials into their designs and can simply be enjoyed as decorative objects in their own right. Ceramic Yaara Nir Kachlon Known for her elegant and
functional ceramic houseware, Negev-based designer Yaara Nir Kachlon’s hanukkiah is in keeping with the characteristic minimalism of her creations. A Bezalel Academy graduate, Kachlon has been making and creating beautiful objects for twenty years now, obtaining national and international recognition. Her hanukkiah is angled, so the part intended for the candles is higher than the rest, thus avoiding spillage. Apparently, Tel Aviv Museum’s hanukkiah collection includes an ancient Yemenite menorah reminiscent of hers, though Kachlon says she had no knowledge of its existence before creating
Terrazzo Rafa Terrazzo Objects
Terrazzo has made a come back in recent years, inspiring designer Matan Sade Hemo in her houseware creations. A graduate of Shenkar College’s industrial design department, Sade Hemo combines contemporary materials and traditional techniques. The texture of her terrazzo hanukkiah makes it seems as though it were
made of onyx, and its round shape mirrors the symbolism of cyclical recommencement. The menorah has eight branches of placed at the same height, and one that is slightly elevated. It is made to accommodate oil only and cannot be placed in
her hanukkiah. Price: NIS 230
