ASSUTA MEDICAL REPORT
Innovations in Neurosurgery Nurit Helena Bedussa, MD The Neurosurgery Center, Assuta Medical Centers, Tel Aviv, Israel Neurosurgery isone of themost complex, challenging and rewardingsurgical disciplines. What isbetter than “to peek into someone’s brain and fix it”? The early neurosurgeon was a clinician-neurologist whowoulddiagnose and localizebrain lesionsbased on clinical history and neurological examination. The advent of neuroimaging, computer software and advanced computer processing capabilities, have led to the development of neuronavigation systems, which together with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), create three dimensional models of the brain. Such models may be coupled with augmented reality technologies so that surgeonsand their patients can take avirtual tour through thebrain in the comfort of thedoctor’soffice. New technologies in surgery optics help to discriminate tumor cells from normal brain tissue
and even view the direction and speed of blood flow, improving the safetyof complexsurgeries. Fiber optics technology and digital imaging endoscopy enable surgeons to operatewith three-dimensional imaging at a resolution of 4K. Tumors can even be taken out of the patient’s nose without leaving visible scars. In the functional neurosurgery field advances in imaging technology and novel treatmentmodalities have led to newsurgical treatments usingminimally invasive and precise techniques for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, epilepsy, and psychiatric disorders. All of these advancements would not have been possiblewithout collaborationswithother disciplines such as anesthesia and neurophysiology. Keywords: Neurosurgery, neuroimaging, neuronavigation, functional neurosurgery

Introduction: About 1% of the Israeli population has epilepsy. Although the primary treatment for this disease is pharmacological, about one-third of
patients have drug-resistant epilepsy. Those with focal epilepsy, can be treated by brain surgery in the epileptic focus. To examine the possibility of surgical
