David Ben-Gurion, one of the driving forces who led to the establishment of the State of Israel and its first Prime Minister, joined Kibbutz Sde Boker in 1953 and divided his life between Tel Aviv and the Negev.

In an article on the significance of the Negev, published in 1955, he wrote: “It is in the Negev that the people of Israel will be tested - for only with a united effort of a volunteering people and a planning and implementing State will we accomplish the great mission of populating the wilderness and bringing it to flourish. This effort will determine the fate of the State of Israel and the standing of our people in the history of mankind”.

Combat Fitness Compound The State of Israel needs a high quality army and excellent soldiers. Midreshet Sde Boker is committed to providing the best infrastructure for the students of the High School of Environmental Education and the students of the pre-military preparatory school, preparing them for the important challenges of significant military service. To this end, we recruited one of the leading experts in the field of combat fitness, Col. Res. Chaim Tel-Aviv, who was in charge of training programs and training fighters in the IDF Special Forces, and combat fitness instructors. With the assistance of Colonel Tel-Aviv, we have set up a very diverse training course, which will be available to students for guided and individual training.

Ben-Gurion realized that failure to develop the Negev, settle it and establish signif icant social anchors therein would significantly imperil the entire State of Israel.He established the “Negev Foundation” in 1960 and began to FORMATION “Midreshet Sde Boker”. A governmental public benefit company was founded in 1973, which is funded by the government (60%) and by Yad Ben-Gurion (40%).
