Editor’s Letter
The realities we’re sometimes faced with in Israel can be beyond challenging. Last month’s war with Iran kept us awake at night and closed our skies – but now we’re once again able to breathe and go back to dreaming about new landscapes and cultivating moments of peace. This edition of our magazine, the one you’re holding in your hands right now, feels especially symbolic to me – up to the very last minute we weren’t sure if we’d be able to go to print. As cliché as it may sound, it is the reminder that no storm lasts forever, and that the sun always rises again. In light of this, and for those of you on their way to spending the summer holidays in Israel, we’ve concocted a series of recommendations, north to south: a new glamping site in the Upper Golan Heights’ Kibbutz Ortal, offering a pampering stay in the heart of the gorgeous Golan forests, as well as a whole range of family activities, from cherry-picking with the kids to nighttime lantern-lit forest treks; and in the south, Eilat - Israel’s ultimate vacation city, with its infinite charms and excitement - water sports, yacht tours, extreme adventure parks, snorkeling along stunning coral reefs, you name it, it’s got it. July festivals and cultural events
have thankfully been preserved from cancellation, and our events section brings you the lowdown on the main ones to look out for. However, the annual Israel Festival, considered one of country’s most important, was supposed to start July 1 st , but the war has delayed the opening to July 16 th . Our overview of the festival’s program (this year so very appositely entitled “A dream of recovery amidst the reality of war”), will give you an idea of what to look forward to, with many participating artists diving deep into the horror of October 7. And because we’re all in need of a little light-heartedness, this edition also contains all of our usual food, design, and lifestyle sections. So, whether you’re on your way back home or about to go on holiday, I hope you’ll take the time to take a deep breath and fill the heart with exciting new landscapes and experiences. And again this month (especially this month), we are thinking of our brothers and sisters still held captive in Gaza, and praying ceaselessly for their return. Wishing you a pleasant read and a peaceful flight, Nava Marton @navamarton I Nava@atmospheres.co.il

Exhibition 20&20 A Lens of Her Own | ANU - Museum of the Jewish People, Tel Aviv
This new exhibition at the ANU Museum of the Jewish People shines a light on twenty groundbreaking Jewish women photographers from the interwar period and twenty contemporary Jewish women photographers, including Israelis, currently active worldwide. The exhibition seeks to provide a contemporary perspective on the narrative of photography’s pioneers and does so by asking each contemporary photographer showcased in the exhibition to choose a pioneer photographer and reflect on the connection between their respective oeuvre and lives. The artistic dialogue engendered, deepens our understanding of both contemporary photography and its roots in the past century. The exhibition also presents footage especially produced for the occasion, that documents the creative processes of each of the contemporary photographers participating in the project. Also on display is an exceptional collection of 1920’s cameras. (Curators: Michal Houminer and Asaf Galay). Until January 2027, anumuseum.org.il

Fun for everyone: 6 tips for planning an amusement park day trip with the kids A day at an amusement park with the family is usually an unforgettable experience full of excitement and laughter, but without a bit of planning, it can get quite challenging. So, before you set off on a journey into the world of roller coasters, multimedia rides, beloved characters, et al., here are a few tips for how to maximize the fun / By Adi Shalom
especially if there’s a significant age gap between siblings. 04 What to bring. Pack a change of clothes for each child, diapers if relevant, water, snacks (nothing that melts in the heat), and food that doesn’t require cutlery – check in advance if you can bring food inside the park. Bring a stroller – it not only helps tired little legs but also provides a convenient place to store extra items like jackets or snacks. Don’t forget hats and sun cream if it’s hot, and windbreakers if it’s cold and raining. 05 Decompress when necessary. Make sure you take breaks. Don’t force the kids to go on rides when they don’t want to. Kids can often get overwhelmed and cry. Attach a name tag or a wristband to kids under 8 with your phone number in case they get lost. Have a designated meeting point. Explain to the kids that rules need to be respected most of all for safety reasons. 06 Remember to have fun and stay flexible. You don’t have to follow your plan to the tee. Don’t forget: you’re here to have fun and create family memories. Release a little control and let the kids take the lead as much as possible.
restaurant locations, and showtimes. Review the park map ahead of time so you know exactly where to go when your kid suddenly needs to use the bathroom for instance. I recommend printing the map out, so you have it with you in case the Internet isn’t available. 03 Prioritize rides and manage expectations. Make a list of the rides your kids most want to go to and prioritize them early in the day. Check height requirements for each ride to avoid disappointment and waiting in line for nothing. It’s important the kids understand you won’t be able to get to all the rides in one day, and make sure each child gets to experience the ride they most looked forward to,
01 Choose the right amusement park and buy your tickets ahead. Choose the park you plan on going to according to the ages of your children. Buy your tickets online and ahead of time – it’s almost always cheaper and shortens the time you’ll spend queuing at the entrance. If you can, go off-season as prices are lower and it’s less crowded. Check for discounts, family package deals (sometimes the all-inclusive ones can be a good option), or line jumping passes. 02 Plan your day. Most amusement parks have their own app with park maps, queue lengths, bathroom and

Extreme adventure The Top 94 indoor adventure park Top 94 is a kid’s idea of adventure paradise. This indoor, air-conditioned adventure park is located at the entrance to the city and offers a whole range of experiential activities. The first thing you see as you enter, is a 19m climbing cliff, and there are more climbing walls further along, with one rising to a height of 9m, suitable for all levels and ages. There’s also a bouldering challenge with a 19m ropes course that will challenge even the bravest among you, experiential trampolines, an archery zone, and a play area for the little ones. Outside, there’s a paintball area, mini bungee jumping from a 21m roof, and a 430m go-kart track (minimum height requirement is 135cm). The speed can go up to 35 kmph. There are professional and safe shooting ranges and a
well-equipped historical weapons museum. Wear closed shoes and preferably light and comfortable clothing. There are safety harnesses and ropes at every point, and skilled professionals to guide you through each step. Sandwiches, light meals, coffee, and soft drinks can be purchased at the buffet onsite. Top 94 also hosts events, birthdays, etc. Prices per activity are detailed on their website (accompanying adults are not required to pay). top94.co.il Yacht tours and water sports Captain Philip, Eilat Yachts Captain Philip yacht tours in the Gulf of Eilat offer both utter relaxation and the possibility to enjoy all sorts of exciting water sports activities. Those who wish to can simply sit and relax on the upper deck or lie down by the small jacuzzi pool at the stern of
the ship, drink in hand, but the more sensation-seeking among you have a whole range of activities to chose from. You can dive straight off the diving board into the sea (truly a must - it is sheer joy!), or opt for something more adrenaline pumping like tubing, paragliding, diving, or jet skiing. The tour is about three hours-long; it starts at the marina and continues southwards to the heart of the gulf along the border with Egypt and Jordan. Crystal-clear waters shine all around you as you cruise through and take in the landscape: Aqaba, (on days of good visibility), the mountains of Saudi Arabia, etc. The yacht then anchors at Dekel Beach and the fun begins: the waterslide comes out and the towable tubes inflate (not before everyone has their life jacket on, of course). The yacht also has a bar and a dining room with a rich buffet. eilat.yachts yacht_in_eilat

Owners Chen and Tal Ben-Efraim, two brothers who lost
a relative in the 1997 helicopter disaster, fed thousands of evacuees and soldiers throughout the current war, and on every Memorial Day and Independence Day they host thousands of soldiers in their restaurant. From the moment you enter this place, you can’t help but feel the warm atmosphere that envelops this spacious restaurant (about 400 seats) and the friendly faces of the staff. The meal starts with a cornucopia of salads and dips – hummus, tahini, egg salad, fried eggplant and more, alongside oven-hot Iraqi pitas. Then come the meats. There’s such a rich selection to choose from, and you can also order a sharing platter and enjoy a variety of cuts, including mulard fillet skewers, veal shanks, kebabs, and more. Fish and children’s options are also available. A truly “achla” (“great” in Hebrew) experience. achlaeilat.co.il ■
This long-standing Eilat institution is run by two friends, natives of the city. It’s a lovely neighborhood café that also has a small stage inside for occasional acoustic music shows. Like many local businesses, Branja Café is coming back to life now after long periods of reduced activity due to the war, as more and more tourists from Israel and abroad are coming to town. The menu offers a rich variety of salads, sandwiches, pastas and sharing platters. We enjoyed their brunch menu with green shakshuka and croque madame - a Gouda cheese toasty topped with two fried eggs. The drinks menu is also very diverse, with a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, beers, and cocktails. branja.mytabit.co.il branjacafe Pago Pago Years ago, before having to close, this restaurant was an Eilat foodie favorite. Shopping at the Ice Mall When the heat gets a little too much outside, the Ice Mall is the place to go. Apart from being a fantastic shopping mall, it also offers plenty of fun family activities, starting with the ice-skating rink which gives it its name. It’s 307 meters-long and 14 meters-high and is suitable for both adults and kids (minimum height requirement is 120cm). You can ride the zip coaster in pairs or alone, and you can also control the speed (which reaches 15-18 kmph). Other attractions include the VR Dark Ride, laser tag, a mirror maze, a ropes course, a play area for kids, and more. “A dream of recovery amidst the reality of war” To mark its 64 th edition, this year’s Israel Festival is expanding far beyond Jerusalem and into the communities of Majdal Shams, Kiryat Shmona, Ofakim, and others, north and south. Original material by leading Israeli artists will be presented in all of these locations, each creation an attempt at grappling with our difficult times / By Anat Zacharia
Since October 7, the Israel Festival has played a vital role in providing a stage for Israeli artists as they attempt to make sense of our painful reality. Now more than ever, as the festival marks its 64 th edition, artistic directors Michal Vaknin and Itay Mautner are seeking to be a platform for human connection and expression in the here and now. Under the title “A dream of recovery amidst the reality of war”, the festival will take place this
year across 24 days and for the first time, wiil expand beyond the city of Jerusalem, with many events being held in the north and south, where the impact of war has been the most devastating. “Our request. Our intention. Our prayer” “Our reality stings”, say Michal Vaknin and Itay Mautner. “Our hearts are broken, and our eyes are still far from
dry. And amidst all this, life asks us to infuse it with meaning; to make it worthy of the weight it carries. This year’s festival seeks to offer another perspective on our circumstances, spark a bit of light in the darkness, make room for something else to come in. This is our request. Our intention. Our prayer”, they explain. Israel Festival 2025 has many different events and performances in store, including live concerts, dance

pieces, and theatre productions. Here’s a selection of some of the
most anticipated. Music People
Opening the festival will be “Music People”, a musical project born immediately after October 7. Young artists from the north of Israel will join forces with well-seasoned musicians, such as Leah Shabat, Amir Lev, Jane Bordeaux, Daniella Spector, and more, on the stage of an open-air amphitheater in the Jerusalem Theater Plaza built especially for the occasion, and designed by artist Muhammad Abo Salme. Speeches Against Despair Guri Alfi and Eli Haviv host a dream team of performers that each reinterpret great historical speeches, from a range of times and places in the world, including speeches by Martin Luther King, Charlie Chaplin, David Foster Wallace, Leah Goldberg, Amos Oz, and more, creating an inspiring hybrid of powerful speeches and one-off original performances. Al-Malab (The Pitch) On July 27, 2024, a rocket struck the football pitch in Majdal Shams, taking the lives of 12 children. Raed Shams and Yonatan Blumenfeld, through the original creation of a performative documentary, invite the audience to reflect on the disaster and the questions that arise from it. Brother Tuval Chaim, brother of Yotam Chaim who was kidnapped into Gaza, and who after successfully escaping captivity was accidentally killed by IDF fire, is launching his album, “Brothers” in Kibbutz Tze’elim. Ashes to Gold Award-winning Israeli international trumpeter Avishai Cohen will be performing music from the album he wrote in the wake of October 7. The album’s title evokes the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, kintsugi. Indeed, “Ashes to Gold” moves along the axis between despair and rage, hope and optimism, and contains within it the great aspiration of transforming bad into good, ugly into beautiful, lowly into sublime. Cohen and his quartet will be joined on stage by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra to perform a spectacular orchestral arrangement of the album for 60 musicians. The festival will take place July 16 th to August 14 th . For more information check the festival website: israel-festival.org ■
metal, and rock music, and includes a moving drum duet he recorded with his brother Yotam z”l, who was a gifted drummer. Fusion This autobiographical dance piece by Gal Bruck Gorfung combines dance, video projections, singing, and drag. “Fusion” seeks to coalesce not only the convalescent, but also the internal contradictions: the duality that exists between masculinity and femininity, between movement and paralysis, between life and death. Bruck Gorfung creates a new language that relies on contrasts - ranging from dance virtuosity to disease-driven reflexes - tremors, spasms, and asymmetry. In its quest for wholeness, “Fusion” seeks out the ability to undergo change, transformation, and transcendence.

Rooftop – Jerusalem Located high above the Mamilla mall, the Mamilla Hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar offers both culinary excellence and breathtaking views of Jerusalem’s Old City. The kosher menu is inspired by the South-East Asian table but has a decidedly Jerusalemite touch to it. It was jointly crafted by chefs Kfir Mysnikov and Ran Nehemia, and includes offerings such as taboon-baked specialties, meat and fish dishes prepared in a variety of manners, fresh vegetable dishes, marbled steak, and more. The atmosphere is elegant but not at all stuffy, making it a perfect spot for a romantic date or a special family gathering. The combination of culinary mastery and spectacular views makes this place ideal for any occasion - a unique place for a unique city. mamillahotel.com

A.V. Room – Ashdod This special gem of a place has become an Ashdod nightlife favorite among the city’s foodies and champagne lovers. Launched by the son of Idi Israelovitch, owner of the Ashdod culinary institution “Idi”, the A.V. Room is located high up on a seafront rooftop. Spectacular sea views, a central open kitchen, and a spacious bar create an atmosphere background music. Dishes include red tuna tartare with Persian lemon powder, whitefish sashimi with yuzu, taboon-baked sea bass aside a vegetable salad with a tahini foam dressing, and more, reflecting the Mediterranean spirit of the menu that pairs so well with the plethora of custom cocktails, wines, and champagnes on offer here. A great Japón – Jaffa The Setai Tel Aviv Hotel on the Jaffa seafront is located in an 18 th century building that used to serve as police headquarters under Ottoman rule and in the times of the British Mandate. It’s also where the 1970’s Israeli classic “The Policeman Azulay” was filmed. Then, at the turn of this century, luxury hotel chain Setai transformed it into the gorgeous palace of hospitality that it is today. Recently, a new kosher Asian-inspired rooftop restaurant was inaugurated on its balcony, perched above the Mediterranean. Named after its Setai Miami sister, the menu at Japón includes dishes such as fish and vegetable sushi rolls, sushi poké bowls, Thai papaya salad, and panko-crusted sea bass with spicy truffle, served in a glamorous setting that accentuates the magic of the backdrop. Liwa – Akko “Liwa!” is what the fishermen of Akko call out to each other in unison every morning as they collectively gather forces to stabilize their boat as it launches into sea, and it is in homage to them that this gorgeous seafood rooftop restaurant has been named. Indeed, everything about “Liwa” speaks of the belief in joining collective forces and coordinating individual talents together to create a gastronomic experience of the highest order. Located atop the main building of seafront boutique hotel “Akotika” (which also has other gorgeous locations in Akko’s Old City), it is surrounded by breathtaking views. The kosher menu evokes the flavors of the Arab-Galilean table, with dishes such as fattoush salad with grilled cheese, shish barak fish dumplings with lemony yoghurt sauce, grilled fish, baked fish, raw fish ceviche, etc., and desserts such as basbousa. akotika.co.il/liwa
