11. Because no control group had been used, the experiment could not show whether the drug’s apparent effectiveness was due only to the placebo effect.

(1) The failure to employ a control group meant that whether or not the drug was effective, a placebo effect had probably occurred during the experiment. (2) Although the drug seemed to be effective, the lack of a control group in the experiment had caused a placebo effect. (3) It was not possible to tell whether something besides the placebo effect had caused the drug to appear to be effective, because there had been no control group. (4) Since there was no control group used, a placebo effect would make the drug seem to be effective even if it wasn’t consumed.

12. Product quality was easily shown to have nothing to do with the company’s falling market share.

(1) It was simple to demonstrate that the company’s decreasing market share was unrelated to product quality. (2) Product quality, which actually had no relationship to the company’s declining market share, was easy to evaluate. (3) The company had no easy way to explain its falling market share except by looking at its product quality. (4) There was nothing to be done about product quality, which was causing the company to experience a decline in its share of the market.
