9. The pilot applied the brakes far too late to be able to stop the plane short of the end of the runway.

(1) In order to stop the plane at the end of the runway, the pilot stepped on the brakes much later than usual. (2) Because it was a short runway, the pilot had to use brakes to stop the plane. (3) The pilot could not stop the plane before it ran off the runway, because he did not apply the brakes in time. (4) The pilot never applied the brakes, and so the plane was unable to come to a stop before it came to the end of the runway.
