Lighting a fire inside an igloo may seem foolish. But the heat from a small fire or seal-oil lamp actually strengthens and insulates the structure.
Until recently, Eskimos built their snow homes not only as permanent dwellings but also as temporary shelters. Often, igloos were occupied for one night and then abandoned.
