TEXT 2

One of the few European artists whose charisma rivals that of leading New York artists, such as Andy Warhol, is the German Joseph Beuys. He trained as a sculptor and became an apostle of mixed-media pieces made from ‘poor’ materials; his favorite substance was fat. In the early 1960's Beuys and his compatriot Wolf Vostell were associated with the loose-knit international community of artists known as Fluxus, a 5 non-conformist grouping noted for their happenings, actions, publishing, and mailing activities. Through his enigmatic actions, sculptures, and drawings, Beuys established his reputation as an artist; but his public notoriety is a result of his fierce determination to merge art and life. One critic called him a ‘cultural stormtrooper’. In 1967 he founded 10 the German Student Party, and in 1971 the Organization of Non-Voters: both political organizations. In 1972 he was dismissed from his post at the Dusseldorf Academy because of the chaos caused by putting his educational theories into practice. He believes that his duty as an artist is to educate, and so his recent actions consist of Beuys - wearing, as always, his famous hat and waistcoat - talking to an audience for twelve 15 hours at a stretch and illustrating his concepts, as schoolmasters do, by drawing in chalk on a blackboard.
