(3) While meaningful discoveries can occur by accident, as in the case of the alchemists, or by use of the scientific method, as in the case of the chemists, who appeared after the alchemists, those who use the scientific method will make great discoveries more frequently. (4) Alchemists and chemists both attempted to use the scientific method, but the chemists had much greater success in turning up meaningful discoveries than did the alchemists.
