31. Even if its main computer completely fails, the Space Shuttle has four other backup computers, which can take over all necessary functions.
(1) The Space Shuttle is equipped with five computers, four of which are emergency spares, ready to be used in the event of a failure of the main computer. (2) All of the data on the Space Shuttle's main computer is also copied onto its four backup computers, so that in the event of a failure no information would be lost. (3) The four backup computers carried on the Space Shuttle, which are able to carry out all necessary onboard functions, are there to prevent any possible failure of the main computer. (4) Since the Space Shuttle has four computers altogether, the failure of any one of them would not present a problem; all of the remaining computers would continue to function.
32. Investigators suspected him of being responsible for the missing funds, but had no proof.
(1) Investigators thought that he had committed a crime, but could not prove that any money was actually missing. (2) He was thought to have stolen the money, but the investigators could not prove that he had done so. (3) Investigators believed that he had recovered the missing money, but could not figure out how. (4) It was believed that he had lost the money, but investigators did not know who he had lost it to.
33. The teacher threatened to revert to the old curriculum if the pupils continued to misbehave.
(1) The old teacher felt threatened by the students’ misbehavior, and therefore returned to teaching the old curriculum. (2) The old curriculum was the cause for the pupils’ misbehavior towards the teacher. (3) The teacher announced that due to the students’ good behavior he would continue using the old curriculum. (4) The teacher threatened that unless the students improved their behavior, he would use the old curriculum.
