A feature of the Ontario system is that it requires a job-by-job comparison between men and women, rather than the “wage-line” system favored elsewhere, which can be just as arbitrary, but allows proportional wage adjustments where there are no exact job comparisons. For example, a cleaner might be deemed to be worth 30% of an accountant. In 25 order to evaluate jobs under the Ontario system, companies must grade all jobs according to four criteria: skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions. Those where women pre dominate are then compared with jobs of equal value held by men, and wages for the two groups must be brought into line.
