Text I (Questions 13-17)
Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 in Baumgarten, a rural suburb of Vienna, the son of a gold engraver. His father came from Bohemia and had worked his way from very humble origins to a reasonably modest trade. His mother came from a poor family. In her youth she had had ambitions for a career as a singer in the theater without ever being able to realize that dream. 5 Years later - in Vienna, around 1900, the work of Gustav Klimt was the artistic signal for the start of the 20th century. He was undeniably the most important Austrian at the turn of the century, leading all of Europe to a complex art, an art whose aim was to produce pictures with new and revolutionary content. The name of this new style of art was Art Nouveau, which is French for "new art". Klimt's paintings were characterized as erotic and 10 psychological. In fact, it was the sensuality in Klimt's paintings that caused a hostile reaction to his art. The reaction to the ceiling murals painted for the University of Vienna is a good example. Klimt was influenced by many historical art styles, which included ancient Egyptian, Byzantine and Minoan art, and medieval paintings and woodcuts. But these were not the 15 only influences. Klimt drew upon modern photography and the works of other modern artists for his inspiration. These many sources, along with his own special flare, made the art of Gustav Klimt something worth going to the museum for!
