In American mythology, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor still represents, even after half a century, not only the act that brought the US into World War II, but also a classic moment of treachery and betrayal. Certainly it was a moment of historic surprise, a moment when the impossible happened, when warfare suddenly spread, for the first and only time in history, to virtually the whole world. 5 This was the moment that changed Americans from a nation of provincial innocents, not only ignorant of the great world but proud of their ignorance, into a nation that would often have to bear the burden of rescuing that world. The same violent storm also changed the Japanese from a people trying to find their place on the edge of the great world into a nation that would eventually redefine that world and place itself at the very center. 10 Immediately after defeating the Japanese in that long and bloody war, the Americans found themselves conquerors of Japan, and as such, responsible for Japan's reconstruction. What the United States did not realize in those early years of the rebuilding of Japan was that it was creating, in its own hands, an economic powerhouse that would later threaten the economic might and influence of its creator. Today, there is a new battleground between the 15 two old enemies, only this time there will be no shots heard.
