Restatements (Questions 9-12) This part consists of several sentences, each followed by four possible ways of restating the main idea of that sentence in different words. For each question, choose the one restatement which best expresses the meaning of the original sentence. 9. The Space Shuttle lands at such high speed that it must be slowed considerably by a drag parachute before its brakes can be used. (1) Whenever the Space Shuttle’s brakes cannot be used, a drag parachute is used instead to slow it from its very high speed when landing. (2) The Space Shuttle’s drag parachute is used to slow it down before landing, and its brakes are used to reduce its high speed after landing. (3) A vehicle which lands at high speed, such as the Space Shuttle, must use a drag parachute as well as conventional brakes. (4) The Space Shuttle’s brakes are not applied until after a drag parachute has been deployed to greatly reduce its high landing speed. 10. Although the radiation leak was immediately discovered, more than three hours elapsed before anything was actually done about it. (1) The radiation leak was discovered right away, but it could not be stopped until three more hours had passed. (2) The time between the discovery of the radiation leak and the time when work on the leak began was more than three hours. (3) Although a few persons learned of the radiation leak immediately, it was not generally known until over three hours later. (4) Even if the radiation leak had been found at once, it still would have taken over three hours to get repairs started.
