Exhibition “A matter of time: the materials that shaped modern life” | The Israel Museum, Jerusalem In the mid-19th century, with the development of industry and the growing belief in the power of science and technology, a global race for the exploitation of raw materials took over the world. These materials changed trade routes, the lives of communities, and the environment itself - laying the foundations for the consumer culture we know today. At the center of the new exhibition are three materials that were considered the materials of the future at the time: gutta-percha (a natural material extracted from the resin of trees that grows in the Far East), rubber, and celluloid, which offered a substitute for natural, expensive, and rare materials, paving the way towards modern plastic. But the story of invention and advancement also came at a price. The exhibition reveals the extent of the exploitation of local populations, the harsh working conditions, and the profound changes caused to the landscape and environment and offers a look at the beginnings of consumer culture and the path that led to the environmental crisis of today. Concerts will be taking place at Hansen House and at the YMCA. October 16-17, jbo.co.il
