8 tips for a successful multigenerational trip abroad As we all know, grandparents love spoiling and pampering their grandkids – and what could be more pampering than a trip abroad with gran and granddad? But for everyone to actually enjoy the vacation, a bit of planning ahead is necessary. Here are a few tips to help you make it work / By Roni Langerman-Ziv
01 Choosing the right destination. Many grandparents take their

grandchildren on Bar/Bat Mitzvah trips, which is an age when children already have clear preferences, likes and dislikes. Make sure you opt for the kind of trip and destination you know everyone will enjoy. 02 Managing expectations. Make sure the kids know what their grandparents consider to be ok to do - and what is not - before the trip itself, as well as what they are allowed to do on their own. Establish safety and behavior rules, show them pictures of the destination and ask each of them what is the one thing they most want to do - this will help avoid disappointment down the line. 03 Planning the trip route. Keep the pace relaxed to prevent burnout and frustration. Involve the children in planning the route, pick one or two points of interest to explore each day and include time for free and spontaneous enjoyment within the plan - and have a plan B ready in case plans change last minute. 04 Planning ahead. Long journeys and waiting in line can be challenging, both for you and the kids. When you pick your destination, leave time for stops on
the way. Also, when possible, get tickets in advance to places you plan to visit so as to avoid long queues. 05 Packing. Prepare lists of what to pack for the kids in collaboration with the parents, and make sure each child has their own bag with personal items like their phone, charger, water bottle, snacks, favorite toy, book, etc. It’s best to keep passports with you. 06 Accommodation. Renting an apartment rather than booking fancy hotel rooms works best with children. It allows for more freedom and leeway, as for the opportunity to prepare meals. Living together in a home setting creates a
sense of togetherness that adds priceless value to the experience. 07 Delegating responsibilities. Giving the kids responsibilities like navigating the confidence and makes them feel like active partners in the experience. 08 Documenting your trip. The kids will probably post pics on social media but creating a special travel journal in the form of a notebook where each of you writes their thoughts and memories every evening is a great way of documenting the trip and preserving the uniqueness of the experience. map on your phone or taking pictures increases their self
