08 Day Trip

From the Switzerland Forest Observation Deck to gushing waterfalls / Yaakov Shkolnik

Switzerland Forest is situated on the steep slope that descends from Mount Poriah to Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee. The peaks here rise to about 400 meters above the Sea of Galilee, which guarantees spectacular views of the lake, the Golan, Mount Hermon, and the city of Tiberias. The KKL JNF has developed observation points and paths throughout the forest. The drive along the scenic road in the forest is truly breathtaking. Start your journey near the Poriah Youth Hostel, at the entrance to the road, adjacent to Route 7677. There, you’ll find the Shaul Oron Lookout, named in honor of Sergeant Shaul Oron who was killed during Operation Protective Edge on July 20 2014. As you proceed along the road, you’ll come across a multitude of stupendous lookout points, before you eventually reach the Kestenbaum Park, near Tiberias. From here, continue onto the circular walking path that leads up

to the Carl Lutz Observatory which commemorates Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz, Righteous Among the Nations, who saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. January 27th marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day – an opportunity to visit the site and honor his memory. Access: From the Poriah-Kinneret road (road 7677), turn north at the entrance to the Poriah Hostel (Waze: Mitzpe Oron Shaul). Waterfall delight Last month’s heavy rainfall has restored the water supply of many waterfalls across the country. As we hope for yet more restorative rain in the coming weeks, here are five beautiful spots to explore in the meantime, where the water has begun flowing again: Saar Stream in the Golan Heights, the Nahal Ayun Reserve and the Banias Reserve in the Hula Valley, Zavitan Stream in the Golan Heights, and Tzalmon Stream in the Galilee.
