It’s wintertime in Israel, and though temperatures remain mild this time of year, there’s always the hope for some snow – snow that’ll paint the landscapes white and make them even more spectacular. But for now, the days alternate between heavy rain and warm winter sunshine, enticing us to head out and enjoy the outdoors. Winter breaks in Israel offer a quieter, more intimate experience that during the crowded summer months. This issue contains several recommendations for what to see and do this time of year, north to south - from soaking in hot springs, to picking strawberries, to exploring an exciting cultural hub in Tel Aviv, and going on a family vacation in the desert. There are also lots of interesting exhibitions to discover in Israeli museums across the country. We’ve selected some of the most notable, including Local Testimony

2025, the annual photojournalism exhibition where 82 fascinating works documenting the complex realities of life in Israel are on show. Another great Israeli winter destination is the city of Eilat, especially for those looking to escape the cold and the rain – it’s chockfull of fun things to do and intriguing culinary spots to discover. Our food section brings you a taste of some of the most exciting. And as always, we give you an overview of the month’s tourism highlights, a look at the most interesting events around the country, and more. This new year begins with one last deceased hostage - Ran Gvili - still remaining in Gaza. We continue to pray ceaselessly for the return of his body to his loved ones back home. Wishing you a pleasant read and a peaceful flight, Nava Marton @nava.marton I nava@atmospheres.co.il

Exhibition Pollination Unveiled | The Steinhardt Museum of National History, Tel Aviv An exhibition that explores one of nature’s most impressive and vital mechanisms: pollination, inviting visitors to discover the “behind the scenes” world of the delicate and beautiful bond that exists between plants and animals, and to reveal the complex ways in which plants attract animals. The exhibition combines items from the museum’s national natural history collections, interactive installations, artworks by Israeli artists, and scientific research stories. This combination of science and art highlights the complexity, beauty, and vitality of the pollination mechanism. Exhibition THE SPARK by Work Off Art | Tel Aviv

Amidst the stresses and uncertainty of everyday life, we keep looking out for sparks of inspiration and creativity, even in times of personal and collective crisis. This exhibition, held in what once was a dairy factory in the south of Tel Aviv, showcases works by dozens of artists who have transformed this huge 43-room building into a fascinating quest to find this said spark. Works on show include: a sculpture made of hundreds of hanging kitchen knives underlining the tension between everyday life objects and danger, an installation made up of mundane objects that from a certain angle, depict Elon Musk’s face, a child’s bedroom that, depending on the angle, shifts into sparks of imagination and inspiration, and a host of other intriguing and inspiring artistic creations. Exhibition Face to Face, The Eilat Artists’ Gallery | Eilat

Painter Reuven Rubin’s grandchildren Gidi and Michal Rubin, he a painter, she a photographer, present their work in this joint exhibition in which closeness and absence coexist. Both artists take a deep and sensitive look at what it means to be a person, and at the notions of identity and presence - each in their own way: through light, color, image, and the unspoken. Michal takes pictures of family and friends in simple yet meaningful moments, Gidi’s works deal with the human figure, but not through portraits. Alongside the artworks, a film of interviews with the siblings, filmed in London (where they both live), is also screened, adding a layer of depth to the exhibition experience. Performing Arts Nona, The Vertigo Dance Company | across Israel

Nona is a piece that explores the notion of time and how though it escapes us, is the only thing we really have in our hands. The dancers are placed at the center of the stage, in the middle of the race against time of modern life. The body is pushed forward, sometimes to the point of mechanicalness, repetitive movements, running - but staying stuck in one place. Then, suddenly, time slows down, opens, frees itself from urgency and allows for presence and observation. “Nona” was born from the seemingly simple question: “does time pass us by, or do we move within it?”. The title is based on the stories of three goddesses from the Greek and Roman mythology, who weave the threads of every person’s life. Like the threads they weave, in dance, time unravels and is woven back together, again and again. Check-in I Our Guide

From FOMO to Slow-Mo: 7 tips for a more relaxed, slow paced, meaningful vacation FOMO can turn a vacation into a stressful race to cross items off a list, but slow-travel takes a different, more relaxed approach, focusing on the art of prioritizing quality over quantity, and creating meaningful memories over checklists. Here’s our guide to planning the perfect slow-mo trip / By Nava Marton

01 Stay in one place for longer. Instead of arriving somewhere and staying just for a day before moving onto the next city, stay for three or four days so that you really have the time to become familiar with its streets and atmosphere. This way, you get to really experience its specific vibe and rhythm. 02 Leave more room for spontaneity. Leave room in your itinerary for spontaneous experiences. Flexibility is at the core of slow-travel – it lets you go with the flow and change direction when something interesting pops up, rather than being tied to a schedule set three months in advance. 03 Do less but add more purpose. Instead of visiting ten museums, choose three or four and spend real quality time there. Take your time looking at the pictures and take in the whole experience. 04 Use public transport. Instead of taking taxis everywhere, use public transport, talk to locals along the way, ask them for recommendations. The ride will be an experience in itself - not just a

terstock Photo: Shut

way to get to your destination. 05 Make time for meaningful experiences. Experiences such as going to a local cooking or language class will add meaning and depth to your vacation. If you’re staying in the same place for an extended period, you can even try finding a part-time job that can finance your stay – it’s a great way to make real connections within the local community, and even make you feel like a local, instead of a mere tourist passing through. 06 Eat where the locals do. Skip the restaurants recommended by search engines or

the ones you see on Instagram. Look for places where locals come to eat – those little hidden spots where they go to have lunch in the middle of a workday or go out to on the weekends. Through local food, you can deeply connect with the character of a place, and its people. 07 Document your trip authentically. Document your trip at times that feel real and meaningful, and if you’re posting about your travels on social media, tell the story behind the picture. Part of slow travel is also avoiding the urge to take photos and upload everything at once – it’s about focusing on the experience itself, not how it looks.

Israeli winters are a special blend of occasional cold, rain and even snow - and mild sunny days that allow for fun outdoor activities, north to south. Here are our top recommendations, from bathing in hot springs, to picking strawberries, and weekends in the desert / By Ariela Aflalo Winter fun: activities and experiences to enjoy on your next winter break

01 Where to get warm The hot springs of Hammat Tiberias In the 1920s, archaeological excavations uncovered the remains of the ancient city of Hammat, including 17 hot springs in which thermo-mineral water with exceptional healing properties flows

at a temperature of 60°C. Nowadays, the hot springs of Hammat are maintained by the Nature and Parks Authority, and a beautiful sprawling garden grows all around them. The water is channeled through three shallow wading pools, and it is an absolute delight to dip your feet in them, warm up, and relax your muscles, especially on rainy days or in the evening, in the moonlight. The

Hammat Tiberias National Park is also the site of spectacular mosaics, as well as of a wonderfully preserved 18th century Turkish bathhouse. The park also offers gorgeous panoramic views, a hiking trail that passes through the remains of the ancient city and baths, a foot reflexology trail, and picnic tables and changing rooms. parks.org.il

It’s an ideal place to stop on a day out, either just for a coffee and a pastry at Jolan’s Bakery, a burger at the Klompus restaurant, or an ice cream at the Buza gelateria. 08 Day Trip

From the Switzerland Forest Observation Deck to gushing waterfalls / Yaakov Shkolnik

Switzerland Forest is situated on the steep slope that descends from Mount Poriah to Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee. The peaks here rise to about 400 meters above the Sea of Galilee, which guarantees spectacular views of the lake, the Golan, Mount Hermon, and the city of Tiberias. The KKL JNF has developed observation points and paths throughout the forest. The drive along the scenic road in the forest is truly breathtaking. Start your journey near the Poriah Youth Hostel, at the entrance to the road, adjacent to Route 7677. There, you’ll find the Shaul Oron Lookout, named in honor of Sergeant Shaul Oron who was killed during Operation Protective Edge on July 20 2014. As you proceed along the road, you’ll come across a multitude of stupendous lookout points, before you eventually reach the Kestenbaum Park, near Tiberias. From here, continue onto the circular walking path that leads up

to the Carl Lutz Observatory which commemorates Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz, Righteous Among the Nations, who saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. January 27th marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day – an opportunity to visit the site and honor his memory. Access: From the Poriah-Kinneret road (road 7677), turn north at the entrance to the Poriah Hostel (Waze: Mitzpe Oron Shaul). Waterfall delight Last month’s heavy rainfall has restored the water supply of many waterfalls across the country. As we hope for yet more restorative rain in the coming weeks, here are five beautiful spots to explore in the meantime, where the water has begun flowing again: Saar Stream in the Golan Heights, the Nahal Ayun Reserve and the Banias Reserve in the Hula Valley, Zavitan Stream in the Golan Heights, and Tzalmon Stream in the Galilee.

5 new restaurants to try out in Eilat

Eilat is truly the perfect winter break destination, with its perpetually mild temperatures and vibrant culinary scene, with so many new eateries to have recently opened there, from a Mediterranean taverna to a cozy wine bar. Here are five delicious Eilati recommendations / By Sharon Ben-David

Lilie | a charming Mediterranean taverna Right on the shoreline, chef Ohad Levy recently opened “Lilie”, a charming little Mediterranean taverna, where guests include local surfers from the nearby beaches, families, and couples on a romantic date. More than two decades of craftsmanship and dedication are reflected in the seasonal menu, based mainly on fish and fresh local produce, with a sophisticated personal interpretation of Mediterranean classics. Dishes include fish tartare with mascarpone tzatziki, gnocchi in tomato butter and thyme, deliciously soft fish dumplings, and more, served in a beautifully lit dining room that looks out onto the sea. Lilie is also a direct continuation of Levy’s family tradition, as his grandfather once owned an Eilat beach and restaurant. @lilie_eilat

Zanzi | a stylish new rooftop bar and restaurant

This new rooftop restaurant has breathed new life into the iconic “Spiral Lighthouse” building on the Eilat promenade. With stunning views of the Eilat bay and the warm desert air enveloping the atmosphere, Zanzi feels like a little trip to Zanzibar, only with the salty scent of the Red Sea. Its central bar with designer lighting fixtures and the soft music pulsating in the background,

contribute to creating a sense of relaxation and excitement only Eilat can conjure up. Delicious cocktails are served aside colorful and tempting plates in a fashionable and trendy dining space that is unlike anything we’ve seen here before. Zanzi has brought to Eilat that special kind of glamour and style you find in the best rooftops bars around the world. @zanzi.eilat

Traklin | a lovely little bistro café This new café in the Almogim neighborhood, close to the city center but tucked away from the hustle and bustle, is a relaxed bistro café where you can while away the hours with a coffee and a pastry, or a warm hearty homemade dish. In an inviting dining space and a spacious green outdoor terrace facing the street, rich and colorful breakfasts are served with eggs anyway you want them, fresh cheeses, salads, breads, and dips, shakshuka with homemade hot pepper sauce, sandwiches, and pastries of every kind, generous pasta dishes, fish dishes, and more. The drinks’ menu includes fresh juices, hot and cold drinks, matcha with strawberry jam - an Eilati version well-worth a try – and on the weekends, there are lovely little farmers’ market fairs, and vintage clothes’ fairs. @traklin.eilat

Rechter | a cozy and elegant wine bar Yuval Ziv, owner of beloved Eilat bakery Broitman Bread, that recently opened a new location next to the old control tower, opposite the area that once housed the airport and on which the Terminal Park is now built, is by no means resting on his laurels, venturing out with a new little wine bar, Rechter. Named like the mall it is located in, its wine selection is truly dazzling, with wines from Israel and around the world, from France, Italy and Spain, to Austria, Greece and South Africa. The wine is served alongside Broitman bakery quiches, artisan cheeses with seasonal fruits and quince marmalade, delicious bruschettas, roasted vegetables, and more. The atmosphere at Rechter is warm and cozy, and if you came across a place like this in a little Paris or Rome alleyway, you’d think this was exactly what you were looking for – and now you can find it in the heart of Eilat. @rechterwinebar

BBA | a colorful burger joint

BBA, short for “Buns by Almog”, is an unconventional burger joint in Neighborhood A, the oldest in Eilat. Here, in a small space on a quiet street, Almog Levy serves meticulously crafted burgers and American diner delicacies, all while still doing reserve service in the war effort. Juicy beef burgers in crispy sealed buns, chicken burgers, crunchy schnitzel, and classic hamburgers are served aside homemade sauces that add tangy sourness, spiciness, and fresh flavors to every bite, as well as perfectly seasoned waffle fries, golden onion rings, dips, and side dishes - just what you

As part of EL AL’s activities during the recent Hanukkah holiday, we created an engaging collaboration with the Ramon Foundation, in memory of Ilan, Rona, and Assaf Ramon. We were delighted to partner with students from the Ramon Foundation’s Space Club program, who designed unique origami dreidels for our customers. All EL AL and Sundor passengers flying during Hanukkah enjoyed these colorful

dreidels, one of the most iconic symbols of the holiday.

Invisible wounds from war and terror can deeply affect daily life: sudden fear, intrusive memories, and avoiding situations that trigger distress. We often cannot know what someone is dealing with, so patience and a gentle “How are you - really?, or even a little smile, can change someone’s day. For over 28 years, NATAL – Israel Trauma and Resiliency Center – has supported trauma survivors through a 24/7 helpline, professional trauma-informed care, community programs, employment support, and training for organizations worldwide. As part of the national effort to raise awareness about post-trauma, EL AL is taking part in the “Purple Night” initiative, directing passengers via onboard screens to NATAL’s mental-health support services.
