The Rashi Foundation advances social mobility and equal opportunity in Israel’s geographic and social periphery, focusing on education, employment and welfare among children, youth and young adults. A Leading Social Organization Starting as a modest philanthropic fund, Rashi has evolved over 40 years of activity into one of Israel’s leading social organizations, working in collaboration with dozens of partners. Many of its initiatives have been scaled up into national public services. The School Lunch Program, for example, began as a small pilot to provide a nutritious meal to kindergarten and
French-Jewish philanthropist Gustave Leven has made an indelible impact on Israeli society since the founding of the State. He was a successful businessman who came from a family with a deeply ingrained tradition of social involvement. One of the highlights of his business career was building the mineral water company Perrier, which he transformed from a small plant
into a major global brand. Aiming to strengthen the newly founded State, Leven made generous donations to various projects in Israel – in the fields of education, higher education, health and welfare. However, he was modest and didn’t want to put his name on any of the projects he invested in, including the Foundation he established in 1984 – the Rashi Foundation.
