It started with a small group. People who wanted to build something meaningful together - without giving up their privacy and independence - and chose the Judean Hills, the very spot where pilgrims once stopped on their way to Jerusalem thousands of years ago. Today, less than a year after opening, Beresheet is a vibrant community of nearly 200 residents - about 40% of them English speakers, veteran and new immigrants and lovers of Israel, who found a home here in two languages, Hebrew and English flowing into one another in every hallway, every class, every table. How to Build a Community at Age 65 and Beyond
Family is always part of the picture Beresheet wasn't built only for its residents - it was built for their families too. Guest apartments let children and grandchildren come and stay, even for extended periods, experiencing the rhythm of life here firsthand. Private halls make it possible to celebrate a bar mitzvah, a Shabbat Chatan, or any family event without leaving home - in a place where the neighbors already know the family's story. Shabbat - the shared language Friday afternoon, and the smell of fresh challah spreads through the whole building. Kabbalat Shabbat with song in the synagogue at the heart of the building, a shared kiddush that brings all residents together around one table - everyone celebrating together, no divide between religious and secular, Hebrew and English. These are the moments when every language meets, no translation needed. Many of Beresheet's English-speaking residents made aliyah directly to the community - not "settling into" Israel, but choosing it, at an age when most people gravitate toward the familiar. An on-site ulpan for Hebrew study allows even those who arrived later in life to integrate at their own pace - and more than a few residents say it's here, at Beresheet, that they first felt how Jerusalem "feels" different, how Eretz Israel is received differently when you arrive by choice. A home for olim, a community built together
Body and mind, in two languages At Beresheet, quality of life is built on two fronts. Personalized nutrition, a half Olympic pool, a Pilates-equipped fitness studio, and hikes along the surrounding nature trails keep the body strong; alongside this, a regular lecture series - featuring first-rate speakers such as Rabbi Lau - together with NLP workshops and cognitive stimulation, nourish the mind. Some programming is also offered in English, so no one is left outside the circle. On the balcony of residents Hadassah and Aharon Nehushtan
TUESDAY - GRANDCHILDREN'S DAY
A community still taking shape Today, less than a year after opening, Beresheet is no longer just "a group of residents" - it's a community with its own identity and traditions. The lesson is simple, yet profound: a community isn't built from the top down. It's built from the ground up - meal after meal, conversation after conversation - until one day you discover that a real community has risen. Because Beresheet wasn't built only for its residents - it was built for everyone who loves them. That's why a full medical framework is already in place - a nurse available 24/7, alongside a supportive care unit, an occupational therapy unit, and a rehabilitation unit coming soon - backed by a network with 30 years of experience and citations of excellence from the Ministry of Health.
