Editor’s Letter
Many of Israel’s nature reserves have recently reopened in the north - and what better way to usher in the new year than to head over and enjoy their spectacular views, hiking trails, and deep-rooted history. Our main article is chockfull of recommendations for fun things to see and do during the winter months, from a spa hotel getaway to a desert bike tour, a visit to the Natural History Museum, or a day out picking strawberries with the family. This month, the MUZA-Eretz Israel Museum is presenting one of the year’s most important photography exhibitions - Local Testimony 2024. With the Iron Swords War and the societal consequences of October 7 featuring heavily, the exhibition includes over 170 works by 69 photojournalists, and offers a multidimensional perspective onto the past year, with photographs covering a wide range of societal and cultural themes.
Also this month: a selection of new restaurants, a look into the “Tzav 8 for Designers” initiative – a project led by Israeli interior designers aimed at redesigning the rooms and living spaces of severely injured soldiers. Next month, “Tzav 8” will be raising funds so that 50 more Tel Hashomer Hospital rehab rooms can be redesigned and adjusted to help injured soldiers on their journey to recovery – and everyone can contribute (see p.28). And as always, this issue contains an overview of the month’s main cultural highlights, guides, tips, recommendations, and more. And again this month, we call for the release of the hostages, praying for their return, as well as for the safety of our soldiers.

Traveler’s Prayer May it be Thy will, Lord of Heaven and Earth, to lead us to peace and safety, to fly us in peace and safety to our desired destination, to find life, joy, and peace. Guard and watch us, we who fly the air pathways, cross the seas, and travel overland routes. Make firm the hands that guide the steering and sustain their spirit, so that they may lead us in peace and safety. For in You alone is our shelter from now unto eternity. The Lord bless thee, keep thee, the Lord make His face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee, the Lord turns His face unto thee, and gives thee peace. Amen.

Romania and Bulgaria join the EU’s Schengen travel zone Romania and Bulgaria partially joined Europe’s ID-check-free travel zone in March 2024, after years of negotiations to join the Schengen area. There is now free access for travelers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place. Citizens of Romania and Bulgaria will now be able to travel freely within the Schengen area, which stretches from Portugal in the west to Greece in the east, from Iceland in the north to Malta in the south, and tourists will be able to enjoy open borders.
Israelis now need an ETA to enter the UK |
As of January 8, Israeli tourists flying to the UK will have to fill out an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) form. This is an online entry permit for citizens from visa-exempt countries who wish to travel to the UK for short-term visits (tourism, business or short-term studies), or transit. The ETA allows border authorities to pre-screen passengers before they board the flight, thus improving security and efficiency. Israelis traveling to the UK (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) have been able to apply for an ETA since November 27, with the system officially coming into effect on January 8 th . The cost of an ETA is £10 and is non refundable, even if not approved.
Israel’s first marine national park Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority and Planning Administration have recently announced the opening of new nature reserves and national parks, among which the Hasharon National Park, the Ramon Crater Nature Reserve, and the Yam Caesarea National Park - the first marine national park in Israel. The classification of the Ramon Crater as a nature reserve is the last step in the implementation of the government’s 1994 decision to preserve the area from mining activity. According to the director-general of the Nature and Parks Authority, Raya Shurki, “marine nature reserves and national parks are the most effective tools for protecting marine life”.

Dance | Kuma – Vertigo Across Israel
“The truth has many faces, and each moment is an opportunity to make a conscious choice”, says choreographer Noa Wertheimer, cocreator of the Vertigo Dance Company’s new piece, Kuma. A unique collaboration between composer Itamar Doari and choreographers Noa Wertheim and Rina Wertheim-Koren, Kuma moves between set dance structures and improvisation, aspiring to inhabit the space between music and movement. The audience is gradually drawn in, invited to glimpse into this inspirational space. The piece was created out of a will to feel the movement of the heart as it contracts and expands, and to follow the movement of the eyes as they open and close. To counter the chaos of today’s reality, the dancers look for an anchor to hold onto, as they rise and fall, finding space between sound and movement, in search of a moment’s rest. 6 tips for the perfect ski trip Ski holidays can be magical, but they require a good dose of planning ahead, especially the first-time round. Here’s how to get your body ready for the slopes and pick the right resort, gear, and equipment / By Guy Halamish
01 Where to stay and when Skiing requires snow, and a lot of it, so peak season is always going to be the best time to go on a ski trip, i.e., January and February, though resorts at high altitudes have snow up to mid-March. December and April are the two ends of the season and there’s no guarantee the snow will be suitable for skiing. 02 What to bring A successful ski trip requires quality skiwear and gear. Ski jackets, pants, gloves, and socks are absolute must-haves, and it’s highly recommended to pack thermal breathable underwear as well. Ski hats are less popular these days as skiing with helmets is now the standard; and don’t forget to bring ski goggles with you! It isn’t necessary to buy the most expensive items, though it’s paramount you ensure your gear is of good quality. 03 Opt for all-inclusive a hotel that’s near the ski lifts If you’re going on your first ski trip, all-inclusive package deals are the way to go, i.e., ones that cover the flights, hotel, ski passes, gear, and ski lessons. This will save you precious time and avoid organizational pitfalls. Make sure your hotel is close to the ski lifts or directly situated by the slopes. Walking more than a few meters with ski boots on to a bus or a ski lift is no fun at all. package deals and choose
Photo: Eugene Levit
04 Rent your ski gear on-site If your package deal doesn’t include ski gear, talk to the staff at your resort’s rental shop. They’ll help you pick what you need. There’s no need to schlep heavy equipment on the plane! 05 Only take lessons form a professional instructor Don’t try to learn to ski on your own! The best way to start having fun on the slopes is taking lessons from a professional. Bypassing lessons would be a grave error as you could potentially injure yourself. Ski requires technique so you need a pro to show you the ropes.
06 Get your body ready Preparing your body for a ski trip is highly recommended. A combination of cardio and strength training (leg muscles in particular) should do the trick. Being tired makes you prone to injuries and falls, so make sure you rest on the third day of your holiday. That way you won’t tire out. Explore the nearby town or do some shopping and get back on the slopes on the following day – you’ll feel totally energized for the rest of your holiday.

2024: a year through the lens Over 170 works by 69 photographers are currently on show at the MUZA – Eretz Israel Museum’s Local Testimony 2024 exhibition, with October 7 and the Iron Swords War featuring as prominent themes. The exhibition offers a multidimensional perspective on the year’s events via a selection of photos of key societal, cultural, and sports moments / By Adi Shalom
Each year, the MUZA-Eretz Israel Museum’s Local Testimony exhibition, celebrates the essential role played by local photojournalists. This year, the works on show have been selected from among the 8,600 photos that were submitted. 124 prints, seven video pieces, and one video installation made by three different photographers make up Local Testimony 2024, which documents the realities brought on by the Iron Swords War. The exhibition’s focus is on the events themselves and on their long-term
societal consequences, through photographs that feature moments of societal and cultural relevance. Some of the themes most explored are: the fight for the release of the hostages, the Haredi protests, daily life under long-term security threats, the evacuated communities of the north and south, nature, the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, and more.

Magazine I Christians in support of Israel
From tourists to allies: Christians choose Israel when it matters most In the wake of the tragic events of October 7, Christian tourists are doing more than visiting holy sites - they’re standing in solidarity with the Jewish people. As tourism numbers decline, these steadfast visitors are proving that their connection to Israel transcends traditional pilgrimage, evolving into a powerful statement of support during challenging times / By Rabbi Elie Mischel
The relationship between Christians and Jews has undergone a remarkable transformation since Israel’s establishment in 1948. What began as cautious pilgrimage visits has blossomed into deep partnerships in the aftermath of October 7 th , 2023. “The evolution we’re witnessing is nothing short of miraculous,” reflects Rabbi Tuly Weisz, founder of Israel365. “Christians aren’t just touring Israel anymore—they’re coming to stand with the Jewish people during one of our most challenging periods.” This shift is particularly significant given the historical context. For centuries, Jewish-Christian relations were marked by tension and mistrust. Today, Christian tourism represents not just a significant economic force but a powerful statement of solidarity. Christian visitors outnumber Jewish tourists to Israel, contributing substantially to the country’s tourism sector, supporting local businesses, tour guides, and the preservation of historical sites. While overall tourism has declined sharply, affecting countless businesses across Israel, Christian visitors who continue to come demonstrate extraordinary commitment. Their presence has evolved from traditional tourism into something more profound — a mission of solidarity. A recent collaboration between Israel365, a Jewish organization, and Generation Zion, a Christian
Young Christian leaders on tour in Israel
organization, exemplifies this new era of partnership. The joint initiative brought young Christian leaders to Israel, including a meaningful Shabbat experience with families in Efrat, many of whom have lost loved ones during the current war. Christian influencer Olivia Layne, who participated in the program, shared a particularly moving moment. Her host family broke down in tears upon her arrival, expressing profound gratitude: “We’re constantly being attacked and ‘bullied’ by the world. We’re doing everything we can to stand up against the bullies. But what you’re doing is even more amazing. You didn’t have to, but here you are, standing up against the bullies FOR US!” Such initiatives, unimaginable just a generation ago, represent a new chapter in Jewish-Christian relations. These partnerships go beyond traditional tourism, fostering joint initiatives, volunteer programs, and philanthropic cooperation that
benefit both communities. As Israel faces international criticism and economic challenges, Christian tourism has become more than an industry—it’s a lifeline of support and solidarity. These visitors bring not just economic benefits but also moral support to communities across Israel, demonstrating that the bonds between Christians and Jews have grown stronger through adversity. Few could have imagined, just decades ago, that ancient wounds would heal into such powerful partnerships. Today, the steadfast presence of Christian visitors in Israel tells a profound story - one of faith transcending boundaries, of friendship forged in difficult times, and of unity when it matters most. Chacoli Spanish inspirations
For years, Tel Aviv’s Dolphinarium complex stood abandoned before finally being torn down. After extensive works, a new recreational area was inaugurated here, with a vast lawn, a water sports center and a new restaurant called Chacoli. Elegantly designed, its beautiful seafront view entices you in to enjoy the flavors of Spain as you gaze into the Mediterranean. The exciting open kitchen adds to the warm, cozy atmosphere, joyfully serving up colorful plates of Spanish-inspired dishes, fresh grilled fish, platters of homemade charcuterie and smoked fish. Fried amuse-bouche, bite-sized tartines, inventive tapas creations, are served in quick succession, delighting the senses, especially if accompanied with a glass of Spanish Txakoli wine. A great place to come and warm your bones on a cold winter’s night. @chacoli_tlv
&Moshik A guest experience like no other
There are gradually more and more Israeli chefs with a Michelin star, but Moshik Roth is the only one working in Israel to have two. His new Tel Aviv venture, &Moshik, is an emulation of his Michelin-starred Amsterdam eatery which he helmed for 11 years until the Covid pandemic hit. It recently opened in a historic building in the Sarona Market area. Meryam Flavors from home
Meryem is celebrity chef Haim Cohen’s new restaurant, located between Ramat Gan and Bnei Brak. Its large, elegantly designed dining room is warm and inviting, and the menu is a clever mix between the traditional food he grew up with and contemporary fine dining. The restaurant’s open kitchen instills drama and excitement, as those lucky enough to get a seat at the central counter witness the theatre of the preparation of delicious kosher dairy and fish dishes. The dizzyingly abundant menu includes chorba consommé with tortellini, grouper and chickpea cigars, grilled red snapper, and so much more, proving once again Cohen’s gift for providing endless surprises and exceptional food. @meryem_restaurant North of Noga

Bringing Galilean flavors to Jaffa Those that have been lucky to be invited into chef Erez Komarovsky’s Jaffa home will surely never forget its pastoral tranquility and gorgeous sea-view balcony. Until the security situation stabilizes in the north of Israel, Komarovsky and his business partner Hanan Ezran have transferred their Galilean kitchen to a pop-up three-day restaurant in Jaffa. The menu includes grilled vegetables, chard, spinach, and jibna-filled pies, as well as Denver steak, veal sweetbread, and more. Also, diners can purchase Galilean specialties made by a fair-trade association promoting Arab and Jewish coexistence at a stall inside the restaurant. “Tszav 8 for Designers” is an initiative born during Operation Cast Lead, about ten years ago. Designers from across Israel rallied round to redesign the rooms of injured soldiers to support them on their recovery journey. The initiative was picked up again last year and next month it will be raising funds for the makeover of an extra 50 living spaces for soldiers from the rehabilitation department in Tel Hashomer Hospital / By Nava Marton
4 rooms, 4 stories Ori Megidish, 19, kidnapped from the Nahal Oz base where she served as a surveillance soldier, and rescued by the IDF in a heroic mission Surveillance soldier Ori Megidish from Kiryat Gat was kidnapped by Hamas from Nahal Oz base. Many of her friends were killed that day. After 23 days in captivity, she was rescued from Gaza, in a heroic IDF operation. She has since recounted the dream she had of her grandmother the night before she was rescued, and how the following morning, she saw a butterfly flying out from a drawer, taking these occurrences for a sign she would be released. Incredibly, even though designers Liat Shaia and Ariela Dahari had not heard this story before, they created a butterfly themed wallpaper for Megidish’s bedroom makeover. Michelle Rukovitzin, 24, intelligence systems technician at Kissufim military base Michelle Rukovitzin was severely injured on October 7 2023. After a three-month coma, she regained consciousness and embarked upon an arduous rehabilitation journey.
Led by Miri Balbul, designer and founder of the design school Sculla, “Tszav 8 for Designers” brought together 250 Israeli designers who raised money, furniture, and resources to redesign 140 rooms for soldiers injured during Operation Cast Lead, as well as refurbish ten apartments and redesign them from top to bottom, to fit the needs of recovering soldiers - Since the start of the current war, the Tszav 8 initiative has been back on track. “On the second day of the war, I formed a team of 300 designers from across the country”, says Balbul, “To date, 150 injured soldiers’ rooms have been redesigned, as well as those of six former hostages. Eight apartments for severely injured soldiers have also been refurbished, all located near the hospital, so it’s easier to come and go from the rehab center. This month, Tszav 8 is launching a fundraising initiative as they hope to refurbish 50 more rooms for injured soldiers still hospital-bound in Tel Hashomer. Reserve duty days will turn into Matmid Frequent Flyer points: EL AL continues to salute IDF reservists Since the beginning of the war, EL AL has launched several initiatives to honor active duty and reserve IDF soldiers, including offering free baggage allowances, priority boarding, and full refund cancellations (benefits still valid today). Additionally, approximately 20,000 free airline tickets to various destinations have been given out. Now, the company is launching a new campaign led by Hanan Ben Ari and his mother, based on a true story of a reservist who missed the birth of his son. This campaign introduces the most significant initiative to date: reservists who have served a total of 100 days or more since October 7 will receive 100 Matmid Frequent Flyer points for each day of reserve duty . This is in addition to the benefit for active duty and reserve soldiers who have served more than 60 days, which includes baggage, preferred seating, and full refund privileges. The points awarded can be redeemed for various benefits, including purchasing Award flight tickets, upgrading to premium class, paying for preferred seating or extra baggage, and purchasing duty free products on the plane. Additionally, Matmid members with a FLYCARD can use the points in various promotions. For example, a reservist who has completed 350 days of reserve duty will receive 35,000 points, which can be used to purchase an Award ticket to destinations such as Rome, Prague, Athens, and more. Registration for the benefit on the EL AL website is open until January 15 or until the allocation is exhausted (whichever comes first). For more details, visit the EL AL website: elal.com
