NOTABLE GRANTS Prof. Jennifer Oser of the Dept. of Politics and Government, and Dr. Yair Hartman of the Dept. of Mathematics received highly competitive Starting Grants from the European Research Council (ERC).

The grant provides € 1.5 million over five years, with an additional € 1 million for startup costs. Prof. Itzik Mizrahi of the Dept. of Life Sciences was one of just 55 researchers to receive an ERC Proof of Concept Grant to develop probiotics targeting cellulose, a main component of dietary fiber. Mizrahi was also one of three winners in the research track of the inaugural Climate Solutions Prize granted by JNF Canada, KKL-JNF Israel and Start-Up Nation Central. He won for his efforts to engineer cows’ microbiome to reduce the amount of methane they produce. Prof. Ehud Meron of the Alexandre Yersin Dept. of Solar Energy and Environmental Physics and research partners from Utrecht, Leiden and Edinburgh universities received an ERC Synergy Grant of €10 million euros for a multidisciplinary project studying whether and how tipping points in ecosystems can be prevented.
