BGU & YOU | Spring 2025

distant country, mostly known for its conflicts. But I was completely captivated and immediately fell in love with its energy, its beauty, and the unbreakable spirit of the Israeli people. How could I turn down such an incredible opportunity?” Mirko reflects on his recommendation: “Alessio didn't need much persuading – and I certainly appreciate his love for knowledge, science and research, so BGU was a natural fit! In an era of misinformation – it's rewarding to help spread the truth.” This ongoing cycle of engagement is at the heart of the Halutz initiative. Each recommendation expands its reach, deepening the bonds between BGU and a global community committed to Israel’s future. Beyond the Experience: A Lifelong Commitment The Halutz Initiative extends far beyond the initial program — it sparks a lifelong connection. By immersing fellows in Israel’s pioneering spirit, it equips them with the tools to drive change in their own communities. Many alumni have already assumed leadership roles in organizations supporting BGU and Israel. For example, Leora Hessen (South

Africa – Cohort III), Tanya Golan (South Africa – Cohort III), and Daniel Yakcobi (South Africa – Cohort III) are all expected to join the BGU Board of Governors this year. Similarly, Simon Walton (Cohort II), Maya Orr (Cohort III), and Laura Foster (Cohort III) are set to join the board of BGU UK this summer. Meanwhile, Vanina Berly (Argentina – Cohort III) and Hernan Najenson (Argentina – Cohort II) are deepening their involvement in Argentina, and Ronie Terni (Brazil – Cohort III) has been organizing activities even though there is not an official associates organization in Brazil. These examples represent just a fraction of the dedicated Halutz alumni making an impact worldwide. Many others continue to play crucial roles in strengthening BGU’s global network, ensuring its mission endures. A Call to Future Pioneers For those who believe in Israel’s potential to lead in sustainability, technology, and global problem

solving, Halutz offers a unique gateway to action. With each new cohort, the network expands, fostering a new generation of leaders dedicated to Israel’s future. BGU remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing these leaders. Through the Halutz Initiative, the University not only advances its academic and research mission, but also reinforces the vision that the Negev — and Israel — will continue to flourish through collaboration, innovation, and the enduring power of human connection. For more information or to express interest in joining a future cohort of the Halutz Initiative for Global Leadership or Zin Fellows, please contact your local BGU association.
