Oz. A farmer, agronomist, and educator, Moses devoted decades to strengthening agriculture in Israel and in developing countries, teaching irrigation and sustainable cultivation practices. On October 7, 2023, he was abducted from his home and held captive by Islamic Jihad for 482 days. He was the oldest male hostage to return alive. resilience. Rather than retreat from public life, he has returned to the heart of communal action, helping to lead the rehabilitation of his shattered kibbutz. In honoring Moses, the University cited not only his endurance in captivity, but a lifetime of quiet leadership, love of the land, and belief in the power of community to rebuild. Reflecting on the 2025 honorees, BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz noted: “This year’s recipients exemplify leadership that is deeply human, shaped by responsibility, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to society. Their stories continue David Ben Gurion’s vision for the Negev, Israel, and the world.” The 2025 Ben-Gurion Awards also recognized additional leaders whose contributions have strengthened society in diverse ways: Dr. Esther Luzzatto , BGU alumna, Board of Governors member and former member of the University's executive committee, is a business leader and social activist dedicated to advancing innovation and equality; Hapoel Beer-Sheva Football Club , honored for
its exceptional community engagement and social solidarity; Alon Davidi , Mayor of Sderot, for steadfast civic leadership under fire; Ghadir Hani , an educator and social activist promoting shared society and dialogue; and Prof. Vered Slonim-Nevo , a scholar whose work bridges academic excellence and social action. Together, the 2025 Ben-Gurion Award recipients form a portrait of leadership grounded in service— leadership that persists in the face of adversity and looks, resolutely, toward a shared future. As Ben Gurion University of the Negev continues to grow as a global center of research and social impact, these honorees remind us that vision, courage, and commitment remain the foundation upon which lasting change is built.
