BEN-GURION UNIVERSITY OF THE NEGEV
JEFF KAYE VICE PRESIDENT FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
demonstrated the strength of the global partnerships that sustain the University’s mission even in the most challenging circumstances. Throughout, we maintained our communication and outreach efforts to keep supporters informed and engaged during this period. Through online briefings, written updates, and speaking engagements by BGU students, researchers, and leadership, we ensured that communities around the world remained closely connected to developments in Israel and on campus and to the needs of our students and faculty. MAINTAINING MOMENTUM TOWARD THE FUTURE From its founding, the University has been guided by the vision articulated by David Ben-Gurion – that the future of Israel would be shaped in the Negev. Ben-Gurion believed that it was here, in this desert landscape, that the creativity, determination, and pioneering spirit of the Israeli people would be tested and ultimately fulfilled. The Torah itself speaks of the Negev as a place where perseverance and vision transform desert into opportunity – a landscape that demands creativity, courage, and faith in the future. In many ways, that spirit continues to guide the work of our University today. Jewish tradition also teaches the principle of tikkun olam – the responsibility to repair and improve the world. In the face of adversity, this principle reminds us that rebuilding is not only an act of recovery, but also an act of purpose and hope. And so, while responding to urgent needs, we remained firmly committed to our broader strategic goals.
It is my privilege to present a report which summarizes the activities and impact of the Division for Public Affairs and Resource Development. Through the dedication of our international associations, volunteer leadership, and professional teams across several continents, the Division continues to strengthen the philanthropic and public partnerships that advance Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s mission. RESPONDING TO CHALLENGES WHILE ADVANCING OUR MISSION The past year once again tested the resilience of Israel and of our University community. Following the outbreak of hostilities in June 2025 and again in February 2026, communities across the country faced renewed security threats, including missile attacks that caused damage to infrastructure across the Negev and destroyed facilities on our campus. In these difficult moments, our global community responded with extraordinary generosity and solidarity. Through coordinated emergency fundraising efforts, supporters around the world mobilized critical resources to address urgent needs. More than $16 million was raised to provide immediate assistance for students and staff, strengthen campus security and resilience measures, and support the repair and rebuilding of facilities damaged during the June missile attacks. These efforts ensured that teaching, research, and student life could continue with minimal disruption: 3,600 BGU student reservists received grants recognizing their hardship and sacrifices over the past year.
