2.3 INTERNATIONALIZATION Placing BGU on the global map
The Need We live in a global world, and internationalization is the name of the game. The need to embrace internationalization can be felt across BGU. Take, for example, recruitment. BGU is competing globally for the top researchers and the best and brightest graduate students. All Israeli universities suffer from the brain drain. Our ability to combat it, to recruit and retain outstanding candidates relies on our internationalization efforts. The sheer volume of research at BGU demands the recruitment of a large number of international students. The pool of Israeli researchers at the master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral level is limited, and the competition for the most promising candidates is stiff. A regular influx of outstanding international students will enable us to maintain and increase our research capacity. The presence of more international graduate students also provides new opportunities for international collaborations, student/ researcher exchange, and joint initiatives. The solutions derived from research conducted at BGU have a global reach, offering benefits that extend
to people across the world. Our internationalization efforts create new opportunities to increase our international presence and showcase our research and its applications. BGU is striving to achieve global impact. The high priority placed on this is reflected in our aim to be one of the world’s leading institutions of higher learning. This drives our efforts to become a talent magnet. Global awareness of BGU is critical to our ability to become a talent magnet – internationalization builds awareness, raising the profile of the University and increasing its potential for greater impact. Collaborations with international partners open the door to new opportunities and provide access to additional resources and expertise, thereby increasing our research capacity. Our partners, international students, and postdoctoral researchers become informal ambassadors of Israel and BGU in their home countries, raising awareness of BGU and engendering support for Israel around the world, something which is particularly important today.
